“The Pictish palace of Arthur the soldier, where his 12 battles against the Saxons are sculpted.” (Lambert of St Omer, 'Liber Floridus'.)
The 'Pictish Palace' seemingly might match something at Dover [Guinnion] (like maybe either St Martin-le-Grand or the Painted house?)
(i) Pictish match: First of all this Wonder is not one of "Nennius'" but one of the later Liber Floridus, so it is possible that we could be wrong and that this Wonder is not genuinely our original "Arthur" and doesn't connect with our south-east battle sites. However there maybe be evidences that some knew the 9 battle sites at the time of Liber Floridus, eg the Modena Archivolt may show Dover lighthouse; or that the Floridus Wonders could be original ("Nennius") eg same words "Arthur the Soldier". There are possible literary evidences for "Picts" (&/or "Caledonians") of/in the south-east including Dover [Guinnion]. - Pict(ish) could just mean "painted"/picture, like the pictures this Palace is supposed to have or like the Dover Painted House. - Picts & Cruithne/Pretanikoi/Britons both "(blue) painted"? - Pict may mean "white" which may match our Dover/Guinnion? - [Arthrau king of picts?] / "Arthur dux/leader of the Picts/Pictorum/Pict(s')land". Yet his 9 battle sites are in the south-east. Plus compare dux bellorum, and dux Britanniarum. - The "southern Picts" of St Martin's, Hwiterne "white house" of Ninnian in 560s in ASC/Ethelwerd may possibly match St Martin le Grand at Dover and fort Guinnion and Ty Gwyn [or else Bitterne?] (rather than Whithorn in Galloway)? - ["dun Eidin/edinburg(h) on pictish side of wall"?] Edinburgh is considered to be din Eidyn of the Gododdin which is considered to be Eidyn 1 &/or Eidyn 2 of the Pa Gur. Eidyn 1 of the Pa Gur seems to be Othona [Dubglas]? Eidyn 2 of the Pa Gur matches Guinnion and Dover. - The cynbyn of Eidyn of the PaGur [which match the pagans/Saxons of Guinnion of "Nennius"] have a possible counterpart up Lothian/Gododdin way. - "Albania/Albany" of Arthurian is not Alba / Drum Alban of Scotland/Picts but the Downs / Albion. - The first wonder Loch Lomond was also supposedly “in region of Picts” (but is really in our south-east). - Pict/s slew Constantine at prompting of Vortigern [who was in south/east]. - In at least one or more pre-"Nennius" sources the Weald was part of "Caledonian" wood on at least one occasion (Pliny / Florus / Lucan / etc). - "in a panegyricdelivered in 297, appears the earliest extant mention of the Picts (Picti). The anonymous author makes a poetic reference to Julius Caesar having had a relatively easy task invading Britain, since his opponents were: “... primitive and used only to foes as yet half-naked, like the Picts and the Irish [Hiberni] ...” - "Kay of Pictland" / "Kaw of North Britain". Kay is in the Pa Gur, and the 9 battle sites of the PG match the 9 battle sites of the HB. [Kay might connect with Caesar/Romans?] - "Mordred son of Lot k of Picts". Lothus k of Picts vs Arthur k of Britons. Lot and Lo(n)donesia/"Lothian" may be connected with London/Lundenbyr(i)g or Lu(n)danbyrig (Othona). - "…the Britanni of South Britain were also occasionally called Caledonii and Picti...." (- James Paterson, 'Origin of the Scots and the Scottish Language'.) - also see Tribruit of HB & PG. [- Picts/Pictish district of Horestia might possibly link with Horsa/Hengist? or Arestel/Arestal (which seems to match the Celidon/Weald / Eidyn/Guinnion/Dover / Richborough/"Legions" area)?] - "There are Pictish elements in Tristan story", yet Tristan came from or born at city of Lions/Lyonesse near Scilly in orthodox or possibly matching our city of the legion at Richborough. - the Pictish Palace of Liber Floridus seemingly might match Dover? [- "Pictavians"/Picards of France?] ["No source before Geoff of Mon says that Arthur fought scots/picts"?]
(ii) palace match: the (Pictish) Palace could match with one of the buildings at Dover [Guinnion] like the 'Dover Painted House / mansio / brothel'*, or the St Martin le Grand church [St Martin's of Hwiterne?], or the lighthouse/pharos/tower [compare "Arthur's Oven"/Stenhousmuir? compare "Round Table" at Isneldone?], [or Fort Guinnion [in the Modena archivolt?],] or other? [* It is hard to tell whether the Painted House is or isn't possible since on one hand our sources say/show part/most/all of the House was demolished and covered in the construction of fort, while on other hand source/s seem to imply that at least one room may have survived on the outside of the fort and the skeleton found in the house is medieval.]
(iii) 12 battles sculpted match: the “where his 12 battles … are sculpted” is maybe similar to the sculptures/paintings of the Dover 'Painted house', the paintings of which have a 3d effect like sculptures are 3d. Or it might match St Martin le Grand which has a layout like C|- or O|- which may have had 3 x 3 or 3 x 4 paintings/sculptures (or 9 sides/walls)? Leon Mintz's paper gave tentative evidence of links between Arthur/Merlin & war god Ares/Mars & St Martin.
(iv) Arthur the Soldier / 12 battles match: We have shown that "Arthur's" 9 battle sites match the 9 south-east [Saxon Shore] sites from Yarmouth to Portsmouth/Southampton (with Dover and/or Richborough in the middle). "Arthur" may connect with: - ardu of Snowdon (Arthurian "Snowdon" is Dover/Guinnion); ard of Arddunion "fortress height" (which may correspond with Eidyn/Guinnion/Dover). - "Arthuret" (which may match either [Andrew]/"Arthur"/Dover/Guinnion, Andredes Weald, Arderit/Tribruit, or Anderida).
(v) against the Saxons: The Saxons were mainly in the south-east quarter of Britain/England.
(vi) number/order match: 18th/[28th] wonder could match Guinnion [Dover] 8th battle of "Arthur" (of “Nennius”)? This wonder seemingly may match Dover [Guinnion]. The previous wonder seemingly may be in Thanet area [between Bassas and city of the legion]. The next wonder seems to match Richborough [city of the legion].
(vii) other minor possible evidences/matches: The medieval skeleton of Dover Painted House might possibly be the likes of some Arthurian connected person like "Nennius" (compare Gawain died/buried/skull at Rutupi or Dover) (tho the P.H. skeleton is probably too late?) [Arthur's banqueting hall &/or the drinking at Eidyn (Gododdin) may recall the bacchic 'Painted House'/"brothel"? (Eidyn 2 / mynydd Eidyn of PaGur matches Guinnion/Dover.)]
The main location theories/candidates for the Pictish Palace are: the Dover Painted House? St Martin-le-Grand (Dover)? [St Martin's Hwiterne (ASC)?] Fishbourne palace (4-square)? Battle Abbey?? Round Table ("Isneldone" / "Windsor")? Palace of the Bishops of Llan Dav? Carpow Pictish fort (Adam Ardrey?) ‘A's O'en/O'on’/"Oven of Arthur" / round Roman dome-like structure / temple made of polished stones (near the River Carron, at Stenhousmuir 10-12 mi from Stirling, known as early as 1293) &/or the round house built with polished stones (politis lapidibus) by Emperor Carausius (on the bank of the River Carron)?
