“There is another marvel/wonderfulthing in the region/[cantref] which is called Buelt/Bucit/ Bocuilt (Builth). There is there a ca(i)rn/heapofstones/moundofstones and a/one stone placed upon/ontop/abovethepile has/with a/the print/impression (of the) paw(s)/foot of a/Arthur’s dog in/on it. When chase/hunting the porker/boar/hog/pig (Twrch)Trwyth/Troit/Troy(a)nt, stamped Cabal/Caval(l)/Cafal (who was the dog [horse] of the soldier Arthur) the step in the stone, and afterward(s) Arthur gathered/assembled togetherstones/astonemound under the stone onwhichwas/with the track/print of his dog, and it is called (the) Car(n )Cabal. And men come(,) and (they) take/remove the stone in their hands through/for the space/length of a/the day and (a) night,/; and/evenso, in/on (the daylight of) the following/next day it wouldbe/is found/come (up)on top of his/its/thesame collection/mound/cairn (again).” (- "Nennius".)
Cabal's cairn seems to match one of the Medway megaliths [Celidon]?
For the orthodox candidate note they say: "just as likely"; "myth"; "adapted to explain"; "cast aspersions on the legend"; "with the eye of faith".
(i) Cabal's ca(i)rn connects with Call ("Sharp/Wily"), Kuall ("Speedy") & Cavall/Kauall/Cauall (3 horses/dogs), & Call, Cuall & favourite Cafall/Chauall/Kauall (Arthur's 3 dogs), & Keli & Kueli (2 of Arthur's warriors), & Celli/Kelli & Cuelli (9 battle sites Pa Gur), which last matches Celidon (9 battle sites "Nennius") and Kit's Coty/the Weald (9 actual [Saxon Shore] battle sites).
(ii) horse &/or (dog) Cavall/Cabal match: Cabal can mean dog or horse/cavalry (and carn can mean cairn or hoof) which could connect with white horse stones, or "Horsa's grave" (Kit's Coty, Evans)? [At Bigbury not too far away was found cart-tyres, horseshoes & bits, though late Iron age.]
(iii) buelt/bucit/bocuilt/"builth" match: region Buelt may connect with river Beult in Medway area? [i guess Blue Bell hill is unlikely????] [Cuelli (PaGur)??] Bwlch of C&O?
(iv) mound / Cairn (with dog's (foot)print) match?: Not sure of the exact match for the cairn with print on top, but possibilities include kit's coty (though i don't know if there is a print on the top stone and if it was not covered by earth then), [or, coffin & white horse stones?] A possible difficulty though is that the account seems to imply a mound with lots of stones (like countless stones)?
(v) hunt match: Celidon of "Nennius" is the Weald. One or more sources called the Weald "Caledonian". Celidon/Caledon may be associated with Calydonian boar hunt of Classical? The Harrow way runs thru the area which might be connected with the hunt? [Not sure if 'general's stone' could also connect with hunt??] fine hunting grounds of Arestal? (Arestel seemingly connects with Celidon/Weald & Guinnion/Eidyn/Dover.) [Some maps of the hunt don't show the route going up as far as the orthodox candidate?]
(vi) soldier Arthur match?: "Arthur's" 9 battle sites in "Nennius'" HB match the 9 south-east [Saxon Shore] sites. Could "Arthur" connect with the 'General's Stone'??
(vii) Order match: This wonder matches medway megaliths [celidon/celli]. The previous wonder (levitating altar) matches Reculver Cross [Bassas]. The next wonder Amr's tomb is countless stones [celidon], and the next one cruc mawr is at richborough [city of the legion].
The main candidates of ours &/or others for Cabal's cairn include: Medway megaliths (addington, chestnuts, kit's coty house (& general's stone), smythe's megalith coffin stone, white horse stone, countless stones/little kit's coty, coldrum, [julliberies grave?])? "The East Roman Pharos and Saxon church of St Mary-in-Castro sit in a shallow depression on top of a huge horseshoe-shaped mound called 'Harold's Earthwork'" (Dover)? high rocks/wellington rocks (Tunbridge)? the mountain/hill Carn Gafallt (Elan Valley, Builth)? Carreg Carn March Arthur ("The rock cairn/hoof of Arthur's Horse") (Meirionnydd)? / rock next to Llyn Barfog & rock at Loggerheads (Meirionnydd)? cop Street (Richborough area)? brynCelliDhu (Anglesey)?
sources Cabal('s cairn) mentioned in include: "Nennius"; C&O; Chwedl Geraint fab Erbin.
