“The fourth [14th?] wonder is(:) the spring(s)/fountain(s)/well(s) (of) salt(water) [whichis]there/(found/discovered)inthe same[place], from which springs/fountains salt is boiled/cooked,/: fromthatplace/withwhich various/diverse (plain-)foods canbe/are salted(;) and they are not near the sea, but emerge from the ground/earth.” (- "Nennius"/'HB'.)
This wonder the salt fountains seems to match the Salisbury / Bitterne / Southampton area not far from Portchester/Adurni [Badon].
(i) salt boiled (& foods salted) match: The ‘lower/second salt way’ runs from Salinae/Droitwich to s.e./Winchester/Hampshire coast/Clausentum/Portchester. There was/is a “Saltmarsh east of Southampton”. [Possibly compare name Bitterne (though it is said to be from byht+aren "house near a bend", or "butter")?] (I'm not sure if the "food processing" of Salisbury may connect?)
(ii) "there" / "the same place" ["Hwicce"] match: this 4th wonder is "in same place" as the 3rd Wonder the Hot lake/pool in the territory/area/diocese of "Hwicce". The previous wonder the hot lake ["baths of Badon"] seems to match Southampton/Bitterne not far from Portchester [Badon]. Hwicce/Wiccii (may mean either wich/wiccj "a salt pit, a salt-works", or "locker, chest, trunk", or "wise/wicca" [or, "dry"?], or h-uisce "waters", and/or) could connect with either Itchen river &/or isle of Wight &/or Southwick &/or road to Wickham &/or Hamwic (Clausentum) &/or Titchfield haven &/or Gewis(s(a)e)/Wessex? (Though I know wic(k)/vik may mean "village" or "dairy farm" or "buildings" or "dwelling/camp" or "bay/creek", or wich/wiccj "a salt pit, a salt-works"?) [It doesn't look like Hwiterne could connect with Bitterne as i once wondered/considered?]
(iii) "not near the sea" match?: A possible problem though may be that this wonder "is not near the sea" (or "is far from the sea"). However this could possibly connect with either: - the lower/second Salt Way; or, - Southampton being up the end of the Solent / spithead / Southampton water inlet/indentation some distance from the open sea; or, - Salisbury?]
(iv) order/numbers match: the first 4 wonders seem to go from Lemanis [Tribruit] to Portchester/Southampton [Badon]? This wonder seems to match the Southampton / Portsmouth area [Badon]. The previous wonder the hot lake seems to match Southampton/Bitterne area [Badon]. The next wonder DuoRig habren might match Hamble [Badon]? [We will just extremely tenuously add that we did wonder if wonders 3 & 4 possibly connect with 12th battle Badon via 3x4=12.]
The main candidates for salt fountain(s) include: Salinae? Droitwich (3 salt springs/wichs, inland salt production, near Wroxeter, Worcestershire/Hwicce)? Huntspill (salt making, down the coast)? Salisbury (food processing, not that far from Bitterne/Southampton)? saline springs at Llandrindod Wells / Balnea/s Siluri/a (Baths of the Silurians, Wales)? saline wells at Purton Stoke or Wootton Bassett (nearer Bath)? 4 "wichs" around Chester? Nantwich (wich, in the hundred of Warmundestrou)? Northwich? Middlewich? Fulwich ~ manor of Burwardestone (~ Whitewell / Iscoyd in Flintshire)? Rutupis ("red top" from salt, Kent)? Bitterne? lower/second Salt Way? Southampton (saltmarsh)? saline spring at Hotwells, (Clifton, Bristol)? saltus/silva caledon? saltus Ueteris Ecclesie (Sts lives)? "they themselves being thirsty and not able to drink of the tepid water (river)" (Sts lives)?
