I was wondering if anyone could figure out who Bad Religion was referring to when they said...

at a time when wise men peered
through glass tubes toward the sky
the heavens changed in predictable ways
and one man was able to find
that he had thought he found the answer
and he was quick to write his revelation
but as they were scutinized
in his colleagues eyes
he soon became a mockery

Galileo? Copernicus? Singing from their ass?

Would have to be either Copernicus or Galileo, but its very unclear.
Copernicus wasn't much of a star gazer, his work was primarily mathematical, and by Galileo's time, many people in the church accepted Copoernicus' theory, contrary to popular belief Galileo wasn't put on trial for advocating heliocentricism, but rather for (indirectly) criticising the role of the pope.

Going by popular myth, i would tend to assume Galileo, but if the guys at Bad Religion have done their homework, i would be inclined to assume its Copernicus.

I thought it was Copernicus at first, too... Then again, I have a tendency to have some pretty weird ways of interpeting things.

And they do their homework on most of their songs, like Los Angeles is Burning...
