Was it connected with shooting straight/accurately maybe? (or seeing far like eagle?) Or to intimidate people? Or as as recognition or membership sign? Or to sleep in day? Or to protect the eye from something? ("If your eye offends you pluck it out"?) There is no greater number of REAL pirates who wore eye-patches than there were normal sailors. Its the fictional portrayal that makes have the over subscription of eye-patches.
