Curious the fleur-de-lys..

The French King Louis  invaded Egypt, & was defeated by the Mamluk forces..

Did the Mamluk armies adopt the fleur-de-lys from the French royal heraldry - as a result?

Or was it the other way around?

http://www.warfare.altervista.org/WRG/Crusades-64-Saracen_Heraldry.htm - The fleur-de-lis was the device of Nur ed-Din and also features on a large number of Ayyubid coins. See 'Saracen Heraldry' in Armies and Enemies of the Crusades 1096-1291 by Ian Heath , so it predates the Mamluks.
