Dunno. But if I were to hazard a guess? It was probably due to the Protestant Reformation. What in the hell is he talking about you say? Simple. Prior to the prot-reform... ...heavy mead, rum, gin, beer and wine drinking and ogling of buxom and, hardly concealed displays of rouged and powered flesh was to be seen throughout Europa for example. Common. No offense taken. Twas expected so to speak. After? Restaurants. Old ladies now telling me to have a 'happy holiday' instead of celebrating 'Christ's Mass' with good cheer and kindness towards all my fellow man (tho there I'm in trouble). The only saving grace is Carnival in Rio..Mardi Gras in the 'Big easy' and Fasching in Deutschland. You can thank the Catholic faith for that. Thanks to this post I just noticed two of the eight pubs where I lived are now no-longer pubs. however neither has become a restaurant, both have become betting shops. If you mean this the way I think you do, taverns of old were places that sold food as well as drink. The modern equivalent is a restaurant with a liquor license. A lot of taverns in the old days also provided beds for weary travelers, as well, but that custom morphed into the hotel with a restaurant and bar, usually upscale these days. I don't have an answer for why they aren't still called "taverns", though. ------------- Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? |

I blame the smoking ban and low taxes on supermarket booze. These days, your average working man is reluctant to go down the pub if he can get beer cheaper at the off-license. As a result, landlords jack up the beer prices even higher to stay in business. Since smoking was prohibited, pubs don't feel the same anymore: it was the smoke that neutralised the other smells (bleach from the toilets, fried food, and other peoples body odor) ------------- Me Grimlock not nice Dino! That and a lack of tradition brought on by 'pc', generally liberal, secularists. They prefer the 'gen 4x' neo-yuppy philosophy.
Which is to say the 'eddie bauer', casual clothing look& $500 polarized 'elleGi' sunglasses from Italia. These are the types who let their urchins get laid and made at Spring break; doped and drunk and, chalk it up as a liberal passage. These people would get an ass whupping for even attempting to enter the ole 'Barrell Inn' in Temple, Tx. Matter of fact they wouldn't probably get to the door...just have to take in the parking lot. Especially after they started pontificating on the righteousness of planned parenthood. And........... the stupid frackers would deserve it. Amen. ps. Nah...if your the friend of a local and especially a regular..you would get a pass. Tho you might be asked if you were a homosexual....and not using that term.
Otoh...they'd rather ya was gay then a liberal socialist. Even tho most gays are liberal socialists. In their minds they would just promote you to a Log Cabin Republican status then all is well. Hmmm, In my neck O da woods we have our fair share of Taverns. The next town over, Riverside, has the highest number of bars and taverns per sq. mile in the state. Which could be the reason our town has the highest number of Churches per sq. mile.
What's vanishing here are the privately owned, individualistic, medium priced resturants. We have enough of the "chains".

There has also been a huge cultural shift. Taverns are usually associated with drinking alcoholic beverages Here in the states drinking and driving has become, finally, a no do for the general public.
In the 60's and 70's, diners were open all night on the weekends. When the band I worked with was done playing, we would stop at the diner on the way home, 2-3 am. The diners were almost always packed.
No longer. The Roadhouses are gone, bar bands are gone, and the diners usually close at 11pm.
Folks are doing other things now. They also have to watch out for the cop car sitting around the corner at closing time.
