During the Boer War, Robert Baden-Powell did a bit of spying disguised as a butterfly-collector. The pattern on the wings of the "butterflies" he sketched actually marked out Boer fortifications and gun emplacements. Other sketches of fortresses were disguised as leaves and even an intricate stained-glass window
