The British Museum has a fine collection of hand-axes discovered at Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania, by butterfly collector William Kattwinkel. This archaeological site is one of the oldest hominid settlements: over 600000 years old. Man's ancestors hunted and butchered their meat here while the women gathered shellfish and berries. Olduvai is located in the Great Rift Valley stretching from Syria to Mozambique, deemed the cradle of human evolution due to the discovery of early skeletons like Lucy

Besides the numerous adze that were found there, there was also a full skeleton of an extict elephant that was recovered at the site. It would have taken good coordination to take it down, as this species, the Elephas recki, is the largest to have roamed Africa.
