From the Latin American point of view, all we want to do is to live free. Latinos in general don't trust much the U.S. simply because historical reasons. Too many invasions and interventions in the region has make us to be cautious with a superpower perceived as strong and unpredictable (to us). For a real hemispherical politic to develop, the U.S. should be patient and cautious in healing the events of the past. You should be aware that Latinos are afraid of the U.S. military power and the militaristic attitudes of the right wing.

 

In the economical plane, Latinos perceive that the U.S. don't care much about Latin America and that preffer to make business with Asia and help Africa, without much concern about what happens South of the Border. In short, relations between the U.S. and the South aren't really bad or unfriendly. The problem is mainly a lack of trust and indiference.

 

The U.S. could improve a lot its relations if approve the Free Trade Agreements and colaborate activelly with the economic development of the region. The way Latinos immigrants (including illegals) are treated in the U.S. is also important, because resonate through the hemisphere. For military alliances, it is better that the U.S. prettend a level of equality between theirs members, rather than installing military bases. Above all, the U.S. should be more patient and try to understand theirs neighbours at much as we understand them.

With the scramble for influence and resources in the Arctic, what about the same in the Antarctic?

 

As the US remains the greatest power in the Hemisphere, what might be the effects of all the above on the Monroe Doctrine?  Is it still a factor?
