Round 1 Answers

Q1. What city in Mesopotamia is said to have contained the "Hanging Gardens" and was the capital of the Chaldeans until it was captured by Cyrus the Great?
  • Answer: Babylon. The Chaldean Dynasty ruled the Babylonian Empire for a time until it was conquered by Cyrus.
Q2. What commander of the "Afrika Korps" was nicknamed "the Desert Fox"?
  • Answer: Erwin Rommel
Q3. Who were the two U.S. political rivals who died on the exact same day?
  • Answer: Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, both died on July 4, 1826. Both were rivals in securing the U.S. presidency after Washington. John Adams defeated Jefferson to become the second president, but the result was reversed in the 1800 election. When they died, however, they were no longer rivals, but friends. (Thanks for pointing that out, BoudiccasWrath)
Q4. My first marriage was to an armaments manufacturer, but that marriage failed and I escaped Nazi Germany to the United States, beginning a career in Hollywood. Don't take me as a bimbo, because I have both beauty and brains. I co-invented the frequency hopping technique used in radio control for torpedoes, although my patient expired before it was taken seriously by the U.S. Navy. Who am I?
  • Answer: Hedy Lamarr
Q5. I am the third wife of a Roman emperor, who was more than 30 years my senior. Legend has it I once challenged a famous Roman prostitute to a competition: to see who would wear out more men. I was executed by my husband, the emperor, when he was convinced that I plotted to overthrow him with my lover. Who am I?
  • Answer: Valeria Messalina, wife of the Emperor Claudius. She won the "competition" against the prostitute, who gave up after each had worn out 25 men.
Q6. After my husband's death, I took over and ruled alone as queen. I was a capable ruler and I liked to style myself after other famous queens, naming myself as their successors. I conquered a large amount of land and named myself Empress and my son Emperor, but I eventually lost an important war and my empire was destroyed. According to some sources, the one who conquered me was impressed by my accomplishments and granted me an estate where I spent the rest of my life. Who am I?
  • Answer: Zenobia, Queen of Palmyra. She built an impressive empire in the Eastern Mediterranean but was defeated by Aurelian. (Zenobia was featured in the July edition of the AE Magazine)
Q7. I successfully carried on the family seafaring business while bearing four children. I married my second husband in order to obtain his house, survived imprisonment in a jail, and had Queen Elizabeth I as a pen pal. Who am I?
  • Answer: Grace O'Malley (Granuaile),1530-1603, the Pirate Queen of Connacht. She was known for her part in Irish Rebellions and her piracy against Britain.
Q8. Was removed because the original intended answer was incorrect.

Q9. I was the first from my country to receive world wide fame in science. The discovery I jointly made has saved the life of millions over the years. I was recognized by many awards in my lifetime including a Nobel Prize, a military Cross and a Knighthood. Without me many would not find life so sweet. Who am I?
  • Answer: Frederick Banting (1891-1941) of Canada, who discovered Insulin.
Q10. Hero and poet famous for debauchery. I went to jail for kidnapping my future wife and was banished for a piece of my work, after which I took up practising medicine of some sort. I finally died as a result of my lifestyle. Who am I?
  • Answer: John Wilmot, 2nd Earl of Rochester. He was banished for insulting the King and later became a "doctor" for treating barrenness.
Q11. Father, daughter, and son. Turbulence, rumors, murder, and tales of shocking irregularity defined the portrait of this powerful family. The father partied like a real party animal and fathered the daughter and the son with a mistress. The daughter partied as hard as the father, and as rumor has it, she even bore the father a child through incestuous lust. The handsome son was as notorious, a criminal mind, yet the same qualities made him a model of "virtue" for a great writer of the time. Name the father, the daughter, and the son.
  • Answer: Father: Pope Alexander VI or Roderigo de Lanzol y Borja Daughter: Lucrecia/Lucrezia/Lucretia Borgia. The child born possibly via incest was nicknamed Infans Romanus, the child of Rome. Son: Cesare Borgia, the model prince for Niccolo Machiavelli's Il principe.
Q12. I was a soldier who suffered a grievous wound while fighting for his empire. I left the army and carved out an "empire" for myself in a remote corner of the world. My successors governed this empire for over a hundred years, until they ceded it to the empire that I originally fought for. Who am I, and what was the "empire" that I carved out called? (Hint: He was born in Europe. His "empire" under his sucessors was ceeded some time in the 20th century. He has also inspired a fictional character of a famous writer who also wrote about a trip upriver.)
  • Answer: James Brooke, Rajah of Sarawak (in modern-day Malaysia).  He was granted the title and territory by the Sultan of Brunei in 1841 for his invovlement in local affairs. His sucessors ruled the territory until it was ceeded to the British Empire in 1946. His character formed the basis for the book Lord Jim of Joseph Conrad.

(Moderator's Note: the only correct answer was only partially correct, resulting in 1 point. Thus, the bonus given to Decebal was .90 rather than 1.8).

Q13. I am a scholar general. In my prime, I applied my military genius to defeat and capture a rebel prince, but my military achievement was blemished by my emperor, who released the rebel prince so that he could capture the rebel prince himself. I started my own school of thought, and as a result, my name is listed among some of the most revered educators in the history of my country. I died in my fifties. Who am I?
  • Answer: Wang Yangming or Wang Shouren, famous neo-Confucian educator and scholar general of the mid Ming Dynasty.
Q14. While I was alive, men trembled at my feet. After my death, men dared not disturb my peace, in fear of my curse. Legend has it that whoever opened up my tomb shall doom his entire country to a great calamity. Centuries afterwards, someone finally dug me up, and his nation paid dearly for his act. Who am I, and what was the calamity, disaster, or terrible event that nearly destroyed his country?
  • Answer: 1. Tamerlane or Timur the Lame 2. Operation Barbarossa Legend has it that a curse was placed on Tamerlane's tomb: whoever dared to open it would bring war to his nation. In June 1941, Soviet anthropologist Mikhail M. Gerasimov exhumed Tamerlane's tomb and studied his skeleton to confirm that Tamerlane was very likely Mongoloid and lame. Three days later, Hitler ordered the invasion of the Soviet Union; Operation Barbarossa led to the deaths of more than 20 million Soviet civilians, and battles such as Stalingrad and Kursk top the records as the brutalist in the history of mankind.

Q17. When his father died, he became the ruler of a magnificent city, capital of his empire. However, he did not like the location of his capital and decided to move it to another city. Since the new capital needed people, he decided to move the population from the old capital to the new. The project was a disaster and many people died in the relocation. Later, he attempted an economic reform of his kingdom but failed miserably. For such reasons, he has gone down history with an exceedingly unfavorable reputation. Who was he?
  • Answer: Mohammad bin Tughlaq of the Delhi Sultanate in India. During his rule, he attempted to move the capital away from Delhi, which failed miserably due to the inadequecy of the new location. He also attempted to introduce token currency into his Sultanate, which failed as well.
Q16. According to legend, I was one of the most skilled warriors this country has ever seen. I used to stand in a specific place and challenge passers-by to a fight. I defeated hundreds of my opponents and took their swords. But my last opponent managed to defeat me and from that moment I became his devoted companion. i) Who am i? ii) Who is the opponent who defeated me?
  • Answer: Saito Musashibo Benkei. On his 1000th duel, Benkei was defeated by Minamoto Yosh*tsune.
Q17. He spent most of his long reign of almost 50 years fighting over 50 battles with the enemies of his small country. He won most of these battles and would usually erect a monastery to commemorate each of his victories. In recent times he has been canonized as a saint. His most implacable enemy eventually overcame his successors. His cousin, although less important historically, is a lot more famous then he is. Who is he, and who is his cousin?
  • Answer: Stephen III of Moldavia (also Stefan cel Mare or Stephen the Great); cousin: Vlad III of Wallachia, (also Vlad Tepes or Vlad Dracula)

I couldn't quite understand the last sentence of question 13
Who am I?important historically, is a lot more famous then he is. Who is he, and who is his cousin?
Can anyone explain me this?

And how can you have a precise answer to Question 8, that is a wonder...

Rider That is because there is a mis print in question 13  It should read -

I am a scholar general. In my prime, I applied my military genius to defeat and capture a rebel prince, but my military achievement was blemished by my emperor, who released the rebel prince so that he could capture the rebel prince himself. I started my own school of thought, and as a result, my name is listed among some of the most revered educators in the history of my country. I died in my fifties. Who am I?

this portion does not belong there - important historically, is a lot more famous then he is. Who is he, and who is his cousin?

It is from question #17 . I can't seem to fix it but will Get II to.

The current scores are correct for you for #9 and #10. Although I do make errors sometime, I don't think I could've miscored #10 since it has received very few replies. You submitted an answer for #10 at 6:19 EDT, but it was not the correct answer.

Feel free to PM me if you have any additional questions.

We have two points because when we submitted for the second time, they counted up as correct and they were correct with the first, I assume this and it isn't certain, but I believe that that is the only logical assumption. Ofcourse this has to be changed, I wouldn't like to take 4 extra points...

Yes work does get in the way of the good things. This is my first missed quiz in a couple of years and work is my excuss as well.  As to competition but it looks like TJK is giving you a real battle along with the other usual suspects. Smile and I'll be back next time because Imperator did his usual magic so I can only see the answers to this quiz not the whole data base just in case I want to play next time. He really is very good at those things.  Scoring has its fun too cause I can say things like " na na I know the answer to that question that is driving you nuts and I'm not telling"LOL

Scores updated (12:00 AM EDT), this will be the last time I can update scores until 12 PM EDT.

Dawn, FYI when you update scores, delete the original table first and then paste in the new table. (Delete the stuff inside the post by control-A, then delete).

For the next quiz, I'll write a totally new TQ engine that will be easier to use (i.e. harder for moderators like me to make errors in scoring!) and will automatically update the scores to the forum. The quiz will then be able to run entirely by assistant moderators like Poirot and (in this quiz), Dawn.

The second-to-last update for the first round has been posted.

For number 8 (a very offbeat question, I guess), the answer is looking for something that is uniquely common about the political history of all of the nations on the list. When it was written, one of the nations that logically should be in the list was deliberately left out to make the question more challenging (but I guess that wasn't a good idea after all, since only one person has correctly gotten it).

Tjk: So that's why you've been gone for so long. Now I see!

Round 1 has ended. Please wait for Round 2. Complete Answers will be posted shortly.

The answer to 8 is that all of them had "Alexander" as their ruler. However, I'm open to any reinterpretations.

I don't think "Golden Age," can be the correct answer because Rome was not in a Golden Age at that time. "Invasion," although vague, can possibly be  correct (I'd say about 50-50 for that one). TJK also had a fairly elaborate answer (that the period contained a series of rulers of the same name), and I'm leaning toward that as correct as well.

I apologize for any controversial questions. As I mentioned earlier, for the next quiz, I'll be working on improving the way the quiz is run.

I even hve consider this answer but Alexander was king of Poland starting from the year 1501 (exatly was elected 3rd November 1501)

Yes, I noticed that mistake too, although I was the only one that gave the "right" answer.  I just figured that it seemed like a pretty good answer and it didn't hurt to try...

Round 2 hints have been posted!

Round 1 bonus points were added, based on the percentage of correct responese of question answered in round 1. Only Decebal's score was affected.

Round 2 bonus is more complex. The scenarios for round 2 bonus points are as follows: Decebal will receive 1.8 points for question 12 if the question is correctly answered by at least one participant (TJK is leading 13 to 11.73, so the bonus = 2*(11.78/13) = 1.8). However, if the question is not answered by anyone, no bonus will be given for that question.

Decebal,

Very Sorry for penalizing you there, Cry but I think it is best to remove the question because the intended answer was incorrect. On the converse, allowing the point would potentially lead to the argument that the point was given for an "incorrect" answer.

The good thing, though, is that question number 8, regardless of how it is scored, does not affect the outcome of the quiz going into round two.

I suppose there's not much I can do about it then... I'm kicking myself about the questions I didn't get in part 1 though. I was in the ballpark for all three of them, having localized the countries and historical period for each of the answers during my search, but not quite getting the exact answer. If only work didn't get in the way and I had more timeCry

Quite possibly, but taking into account the well beings during the rule of Severus or whoever ruled until some 213 or 217, then it was better than earlier periods and later periods.

Question 12 was in many ways similar in topic to the Benovsky question of the previous TQ (which was also a very difficult one). Also, I have to say I'm happy that a lot of people got the Zenobia question right... except Emperor Barbarossa who also on staff for the Magazine project. Wink

Answers to Round two questions:

Q12. I was a soldier who suffered a grievous wound while fighting for his empire. I left the army and carved out an "empire" for myself in a remote corner of the world.

Neither did I get it right.. Magazine project doesn't seem to help. Just don't put any Hadrian questions into the next Quiz...

Favourite: definetly Q8, so much fun. (Not making fun, it was a good question).  Ofcourse, I didn't know the answer to Q14 and I looked up for Genghis Khan and Attila, seeing these two weren't correct I just by accident wrote Tamerlane... what great luck.

Maybe in future we should have pro-league for the likes of Decebel, Dawn, TJK and so and amateur league for the rest of us mere mortals.

Great quiz though and thanks to Invictus for all the hard work.....

I third that. Quite an idea but hard in reality, isn't it? Ofcourse, with 3 persons the ProLeague wouldn't be nothing much... Fortunately there are some more skilled persons.

This curse wont do , sorry for those who asked quetion

England in 1931 wasnt at war, but it would be soon, 9 years later
Soviet Union already waged war.Why this and not that?

Curse of Tutan-hka-mon is rather more realiable curse then Timurlane

So this was puzzle i answered good, if you think that Soviet Union war started in 1941 June 22  with Barbarossa you are mistaken.Soviet Union waged war before that period.

Lavish parties, would imply orgies or they just ate grapes?

It said she had lavish parties?

Parties in Rome, that were Lavish were orgies, or perhaps Gladiator fighting

1)Third marriage
2)Husband killed her
3)Lavish party
4)Used second marriage to gain throne, as she did To third
5)Gave birth to Emperor child
6)30 years younger then him

Wink-Wink-Wink out of 6 i got all the clues?

Sorry this was puzzle and even though i didnt get the right name, i would want, and no insult 1/2 points for that

Same with Curse of Tutan-khamom

Operation Barbarossa started in June 22 1941

It was supposed to be started in March 1941
But difficulties in Yugoslavia from 6 April 1941, made slight Changes of Hitler plans

War with Finland was in 1940
Finish war, where people died

If author implies that war started in 1941 with Soviet Union, he is mistaken

Am i now gonna get banned, for speaking truth, or be rewarded as i should adlist point, or maybe more

Those two questions deserve 1/2 points each adlist

This was puzzle and i solved that

Congratulations to everyone, especially TJK, who really gave me a heck of a run. It was fun....

As for that pro-league, maybe we could have a second stage of the quiz, with only the top 5 people or so allowed to compete.

Better idea, Decebal. Then someone would see true competition... ofcourse if all questions would be made by Poirot and you and Dawn and TJK in the top then it would be truly interesting.

These are not puzzles but simple questions: the question was:

I am the third wife of a Roman emperor, who was more than 30 years my senior. Legend has it I once challenged a famous Roman prostitute to a competition: to see who would wear out more men. I was executed by my husband, the emperor, when he was convinced that I plotted to overthrow him with my lover. Who am I?

The husband did not kill her, he had her killed. It is not said that she gave birth to the child of the Emperor. And you have nothing about prostitutes, so you are wrong!!!!!!!

I protest . A quizz with only questions made by poirot would be a nightmare. I would be searching in circles for hours with no idea of where to find the correct answer. Wacko

I said question from 14 around  10 were puzzles

I solved all of those

Had her or killed her, how do you know?
Were you alive then?
Im being robed here, as i think all clues match

Same with curse of Timurlenk

Author of this site that asked that question should have learned a few about Finish wars of 1940 before he put that question

If i knew puzzle were allowed, i would ask such a question, you wouldnt guess in million years.I see im being treated badly, so i will leave

It was told in the question that the Emperor had her executed. That means he didn't kill her himself. Do you really think the Emperor kills anyone?

Dawn: That is actually the plotline for the next TQ, Poirot posts twelve questions about everything (that makes us search for weeks, not hours) and I post four extremely difficult questions about Estonian history (which can't be answered because there are no replies for such in the internet) and Poirot wins. Easy.

Congratulations to all winners and I hope you enjoyoed the Total Quiz!

Acknowledgments
In addition, I would like to thank assistant moderators Dawn and Poirot for their assistance in operating this quiz and in question writing.

It's actually been over one year since I've been moderator for the TQ, so I'm actually looking to step out for the next one. I am not sure who will take over as of now. Poirot said that he was interested but communication has been slow since he's busy in India at the moment. Most likely, they'll also be an assistant role (like Dawn's for this quiz and Poirot's for the previous) to help score the quiz and write questions. If you're interested, let me know through PM. (Priority will be given to veteran participants and strong question writers). I'll also be writing a new software script for the TQ that will be much more flexible and easy to use for the new moderators who will take over.

There were some questions regarding a few questions written by Poirot. I will have to wait until he gets back (which I'm sure he will tomrrow) in order to re-evaluate some of the scores.

Finally, I think this was a fun TQ and I'm glad we had a lot of participants this time. Thank you all for playing! We will have another in three months, so please check back!

Historia Estonii? It says two numbers that I could understand 1987-1991. So is this only about that period?

Great reading anyways. So it wouldn't be bad... to add.

No, the author says that a great calamity threatened those who opened the tomb. Was the Soviet Union attacking Finland a great catastrophe for the Soviets? Was any of the earlier war a calamity for the Soviets? No, the only great calamity for the Soviets was Nazi Germany attacking them, not the start of the war itself.

As for Tutankhamen's curse, the question says explicitly that the curse befell the nation, and not simply the people who opened the tomb. Was Britain in danger from a calamity as a result of "King Tut's curse"?

And no, you're not going to "get banned for speaking truth"; but maybe you should consider that it is you who read the question wrong.

And Poppaea isnt worthy adlist 1/2 points here is why

Just name you 5 good reasons why i deserve 1/2 points

1) Used second marriage to gain power into third marriage
2)Was 30 years younger then her third husband emperor
3)Gave birth to his child
4)Was executed by her husband
5)Had lavish parties, which could mean, they watched cartoon network, or i dont know what lavish parties were then

All clues and i researched wikipedia, and many sources point to her
Its not my bad, some other woman used to do same things, and had same ammount of marriages, was 30 years younger then emperor

i think i adlist deserve 4/1/2 points and not 4

Poppaea isn't correct because she was the second wife of Nero, not the third, and was only 7 years younger than Nero.

Also, partial points are only given if the answer given is only one part of a multi-part answer. Partial points cannot be given if the answer is correct to some part of the clue but not to another. For example, if the answer requires both "Jefferson" and "Adams" and you only give "Jefferson," then .5 points will be given. But if the question has 5 clues and you find an answer that fits 4 of the clues but is incorrect for the remaining 1, the answer cannot be considered correct and partial points cannot be given.

I hope that's clear, and I'm sorry for any misunderstandings you might have had.

Anyways, a great TQ!  Congratulations to Decebal and TJK on a superb performance, again!  Congratulations to Barbarossa (Hint: one of the answers to the questions is the nickname of a fellow AE member) for a job well done.  And last, congratulations to Imperator Invictus and Dawn for excellent moderating work!
