For the same reason it's used in front of any other noun.
'the' being a definitive article is used rather then 'a' or 'an' to specify or paticularize an importance before the noun. where the latter is used to generalize.
eg. I will go to the Llano and meet Baldrick there.
In the more local vernacular it would be:
Going Llanoing and sure as hell hope Baldrick don't get lost out in the dunes.
