Nuclear power is in itself safe. The problems are manmade. Older reactors were constructed without much thought as to the stability of the ground under them.
In the US there are several that sit on faultlines, one sits on one of the main faults on the West Coast.
Also, the control tech. has improved greatly since 3 mile Island.
However, there are reactors still online that were constructed in the 50's. None in the US, but there are some in other countries that were built on the lines of Chernobyl. They use graphite bricks and can be described as a "Nuclear Pile". These are disasters waiting to happen.
