Topic: Do britain and france dislike each other? Posted: 27-Jun-2005 at 03:02 |
I heard from my teacher who lived in the UK for a couple of months that france and uk's relationship is seemingly good, while in reality they think each other to be arrogant and wrong. Is this a correct observation or is there more to this.

Its more of a love hate relationship, Britian and France have exactly
the same opinion of each other, they both site the other as arrogant
and rude and so on.
Its over hyped though, judging by the Number of British people living
in France and the number of French people living in the UK. Still,
makes for good newspaper nonsense.

Alot of ordinary people think so, it gives them an outlet for hostility against what was a traditional enemy. But most better educated people realize and respect the contribution both these nations have made to eachother and the world at large.

There's an old saying " the difference between the English and the French is, the French think they're superior but the English know they are."
I alsways thought Britain and France were best friends. No war since 1815 and fighting as allies in almost every war for two centuries, despite being neighbours and the two most powerful countries in the world. The Alliance Cordial is a century old and both countries share a single economy and a joint passport....... Not exactly the actions of two c**tries that hate each other.
Why is so recently that US people are so scared of European unity and need to make up fictional stories of divisions to feel better?

I dont hate the french, but I dont see whats wrong with the rivalry we have had and always should have.
Its irritating that even today the 200th anniversary of the battle of Trafalgar for example in the reinactment of the battle the teams are called red and blue instead of british and french/spanish so not to cause offence to the french.
Its a minor example of the way we are all being pressed closer together and we have to watch what we say to our french *friends*. I dont see why we should be anymore buddy buddy with the french as we would any other country.
Our histories are interwined but in this modern world, Britain is closer to the US than it is France, and I dont see why that should change.
Overall the love-hate relationship Britain and France has isnt a bad thing.

Yes that was silly. Another Blairism I guess.

The British government is closer to the US administration than to the French. However the British people are closer to the French people than to the American at the moment - over Iraq, over welfare systems, over workplace legislation, over homosexual unions, over the EU constitution (a 'no' from both), over issues like Guantanamo, over the place of religion in society, and in their church-going habits - over pretty well everything you can think of.

Th saying makes sense.. since no war for 156 years you might say they
are friends, but inside I have a feeling that leaders dispise their
friends or so...
