I've just finished reading this relatively new (and free) book called The Padjans (Padjanaks, Pechenegs) by Joseph Amyot Padjan.  Has anyone here read this book?  Padjan demonstrates that the Padjanaks were actually the Kushans.  His arguments are solid and hard to refute, and he supports them with his DNA test results and his father's as well (he includes the DNA test results of his whole family).  But in my opinion his arguments are strong enough to stand even without the DNA test results.  His recent paper Kushans in Croatia clinches the deal.  His book The Padjans includes discussions on the origins of a lot of other peoples in Europe too.  For example, he has definitively settled the matter of the origin of the Romani, or Gypsies, as well.  I copied the description of his book The Padjans from his website:

"The Padjans is a landmark work that begins with a discussion on the origin and history of the author’s family name—Padjan—and that evolves into a book on the origin of his ancestors the Padjanaks (Pechenegs) and Kangar, who arrived together in Europe from Central Asia about 895 CE.  Joseph Amyot Padjan demonstrates that the Padjanaks were a tribe of Huns, known as white Huns; that their name means ‘tribe of white Huns;’ and that before they were known as Padjanaks, they had been known as Kushans.  Likewise, he demonstrates that the name Kushan (ku-shun) means ‘white Hun(s).’  He also demonstrates that the Kangar that merged with the Padjanaks (Kushans) were in antiquity known as Sumerians in Mesopotamia, and he positively identifies the original homeland of the Kangar. He is also the first to identify positively the yDNA haplogroup of the Kangar, or Sumerians, the name by which the Babylonians knew them. He likewise proves that the Kushans (Padjanaks) were known in the past not only as the Yuezhi, but also as the Bai, and as the Bai-shun, which comes from the Chinese 白勋 (Bái xūn, pronounced bai-shun) and means ‘white Hun(s).’ He shows, moreover, that the original name of Bai-shun survives both in Besenyők, the Hungarian form of the Padjanak name, and in, to name a few, Badjanak (Bai-djan-ok, from Bai-shun-ok), Padjanak, and Patzinak, the English transliteration of the form used by Byzantine Emperor Constantine Porphyrogenitus. The author also settles the controversy of the ethnic identity of the Vlachs known as Armâns (Aromanians) by demonstrating that they are members of a large and well-known ethnic group now living mostly in the Caucasus. He also brings to an end the controversy of the origin of the Romani, also known as Gypsies, by demonstrating that their ancestors could have been none other than the Kangar and the Padjanaks. He also discusses the origin and ancestry of the Sumerians, the Tocharians, the Morlachs, the Chernye Klobuki (Black Caps, Black Hoods), the Bunjevci, the Albanians, the Armenians, the Hungarians, and others.  All the arguments that the author makes are strongly supported by the results of his own autosomal DNA tests and those of his father, all of which are included in his book. He also includes the results of his 67-marker yDNA test. And for the purpose of comparison, he includes the results of the autosomal DNA tests of his mother, those of his maternal grandmother, and those of the first-cousin of the father of his mother.  All allele values are displayed as well in the original test reports for each individual. The book also includes a full bibliography."

It's a really well written book (probably because he is a grammarian, as he says).  I enjoyed reading it.  He has figured out a lot of things about a number of different important peoples that other scholars have failed to figure out.  Kudos to Padjan.

Informative and I'll look to find it.

It sounds as if it is an excellent rendition of ethnic euro migrations and assimilations. And for history's sake objective and not inclusive I remain fascinated by this.

My only concern is when DNA is bandied about as the primary mechanism of ultra nationalistic bigots and sectarians.... seeking to propagate an agenda of 'my ethnic base' is superior.

I've just started re-reading it a second time right now.  It is definitely an excellent book.  I like the fact that he keeps it all as simple and as clear as possible.  He seems to be very aware that the subjects that he discusses are all quite complicated and often confusing (because of so many different names used for the same core people over a long period of time).

I agree with you about the misuse of DNA to promote nationalistic agendas.  Fortunately Padjan doesn't go there at all.  His analysis of all the test results, as well as what he has to say about Y-DNA haplogroup H-M69 in particular, is very interesting.  He has apparently done his homework and obviously devoted a lot of thought to the subjects he discusses.

I look forward to hearing your thoughts on his book.
