Following the Civil War many ex-Confederate officers were recruited by the British at Sherman's recommendation. Ironically, for an officer who fought to preserve slavery, his new commander was an ex-slave called Ratib Pasha

Jo Shelby, remembered as the "Jeb Stuart of the West" refused to surrender in 1865. Instead, he headed south with 1000 men, buried his flag at the Rio Grande, and entered Mexico where he offered his services to emperor Maximilian The Lost Cause

I'd like to find out more about the Confederate veterans who enlisted in the British army. I wouldn't be surprised if some of them joined the Boers in 1880

Confederate officer Jacob Carvell joined the Mounties after the Civil War. He rose to the rank of superintendent, but resigned in 1876 and nothing more was heard of him http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/nwmp-pcno/025003-1200-e.html
