I found the following text on wikipedia regarding the Sheikhs in south asia:

"In Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and other parts of South Asia, the title Sheikh signifies Arab descent and comes under high caste of society. However majority are the native Brahmin, Rajput or Khatri tribes which used the title of Sheikh after conversion to Islam. In Delhi it was used by the persian Magi descendants who migrate from persia because of Safavid persecution in 16th century. The Muslims of the Middle East and Central Asia have historically, travelled to South Asia as Sufis during the Islamic Sultanates and Mughal Empire and settled permanently and assumed Shaikh status."

It had no references. Could anybody confirm the truth, complete or partial in this statement. Thanks

I study genetics and the arab dna is in very limited amounts in south asia. its mostly found in balochistan and sindh. Most of the these sheikhs are converted people from hinduism. the only people in south asia who may have more arab dna are Shias, because their famlies might be directly related to the syed's who came from karbala, but even they have probably mixed a lot with local people

If you are pakistani, i must say pakistanis are really a hybrid people. basically pakistanis are a mix of ancestoral south indians(dravdians), ancestoral north indians (who are caucasians) and little components of middle eastern dna
