Easter Island/Rapa Nui in the Pacific Ocean is known for its big statues. In fact, they are the largest statues of the whole southern hemisphere.

But the island contains many more mysteries. Recently, scientists have discovered that a bacterial drug in the ground increases the lifespan. The substance named rapamycin seems to reverse Alzheimer as well.

The fountain of youth stories may contain some truth after all.

Excerpt :

On July 8, in the journal Nature, The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and two collaborating centers reported that the Easter Island compound – called "rapamycin" after the island's Polynesian name, Rapa Nui – extended the expected lifespan of middle-aged mice by 28 percent to 38 percent. In human terms, this would be greater than the predicted increase in extra years of life if cancer and heart disease were both cured and prevented.

Very interesting.  I am ready to try the drug today!  I will be 64 this month and know people in their 80's who do better than I do.  I would do anything if my body were as good as it was when I was 30. Exercising is helpful, but it isn't enough.  I thought I would age gracefully, but that was before I realized how awful we can feel as we age.  It is lack of energy and general weakness, then fear of falling or otherwise getting in physical situation that requires more strength than I have.   Then the spot that might be cancerous, and other lumps and bumps.  If a pill gave me back the physical freedom I once had, and the skin texture I once had, I would use it.   I would settle for either one.  And improved brain function would be wonderful.   I cared for my grandmother with Alzheimer's disease and I don't want to go there.

Hmmm. Interesting! I wonder why it didn't do the Easter Islanders much good.
