28 years ago today (1980), Turkish army (part of NATO) dispersed the government and the parliament in a coup d'etat. The ensuing junta of generals started a fascist rule of terror during which thousands were imprisoned and tortured. Hundreds were killed and thousands exiled.

The fascist junta replaced the 20 year old liberal constitution with a fascist-inspired new constitution and the country had its first multi-party elections in 1983. Turkey still has this constitution which creates much of the EU-inspired legal reform problem including the control of military over its political system.

Perpetrators of this crime were never tried, and their (US trained) leader lives in a Turkish holiday resort today.

The news of the coup was reported to the American president Jimmy Carter by the American intelligence with these words: 'Our boys in Ankara did it.'

Hello Bey

I wasn't alive in those years but from what I read Turkey was practically in a civil war during the late 70s and only when the coup came security came.

Were you active in those years if so can you give us some of your experience?

This is practically true, the place was a mess and stability came after the coup. However, there is reason to belive that the military was responsible for some of the mess (they prepared the conditions for takeover), and also the way they handled the coup.

If the military had just established security and left it at that, nobody would have complained. What happened was they prosecuted millions and tortured thousands, exiled thousands, killed hundreds, dismantled democratic and social institutions, shut down unions, oppressed the Kurds (caused the rise of PKK), destroyed the universities' autonomies (they still don't have them), changed the school curriculum into fascist-islamist bullshit (we still have today), funded Islamic education in schools (thanks to which we have an Islamist government today), replaced the constitution with a fascist one.

In short they managed to retard Turkey's development for decades in just 3 years.
