This topic may be obsolete but I was curious if you can help me out as I've always wanted to know about the Turkomans in NE Iran (Mashad)
From what i've heard, they have lived in these regions of Iran for a long time now, but are they identical/same(genetically, linguistically, culturally) as the Turkmen in Turkmenistan or are they somewhat ''Persianized'' due to their association with Iran as i know many of them celebrate Norowz and other persian festivals.
I don't know the answer, but I'd like to know as well.
I know that they are connected enough with the Turkmen from Turkmenistan to be considered a "threat" by Moscow. (And with reason probably, because during the Cold War the USA was very keen on establishing an anti-Soviet belt on the southern border of the USSR, using the four non-Arab muslim states) I read that Turkmen in the USSR listened to broadcasts from the other side of the border, but were in general not too interested either in adopting the much more fundamentalist approach of islam.
Actually it's a big Kazakh festival, regarding the historical background of Central Asia it doesn't seem to be surprising that these countries though mostly Turkic still have some traditions that trace back in the culture of Iranians.
