QuoteReplyTopic: What was the cause of the American Civil War? Posted: 22-Apr-2005 at 14:13
You say that it is between states rights and slavery. I say that if Lincoln had let the South secede there would have been no Civil War. Therefore I believe that it was Lincoln's desire to save the Union that was the cause of the fighting. So we have 3 causes for the Civil War, both states rights and slavery for the South, and preserving the Union for the North. (Yes, slavery was used as a rallying cry by the polititians)
That is an insightful point, Archeophile. Why did Lincoln want to preserve the Union?
I can have already come up with several rationalizations, but I don't want to inject my opinions to what actually moved Lincoln and the North to the fight the war.

No, but we did have wars that resulted in the deaths of thousands upon thousands on the opposing sides.
