Hi everyone!

After having read the "Cold War in Africa" titled  thread, Id like to hear yalls opinion about the Civil War in Angola: its origins, (reasons behind it & consequences: listing many different perspectives) and if possible (copy and paste) many different points of view from many different authors perspective regarding the civil war itself and its consequences. (1970s up until now)

And last but not least, the standpoints of the three political parties in Angola back in the 1970s up until the end of the civil war. (i.e. MPLA, az FNLA s az UNITA political parties.)

In short: after having analysed/read different perspectives from different authors, draw your own conclusions from your chosen text(s), and share them with the community.  That is,  to help us undestand your reasoning, please post the piece of text you drew your conclusions from, the authors name followed by your own opinion.

Many thanks,

-Earth

Hey there, I'm also rather interested in the Angolan Civil War but have rarely encountered any texts, whether scholarly or journalistic, about the conflict.

As far as I know this war is supposed to be over following the death of UNITA leader/founder Jonas Savimbi a few years ago.

I also consider this lengthy conflict one of the bigger upheavals in africa that nobody really cared about except the geopolitical role it played during the cold war.

anyway, the only significant text I've read was an article in a December 1998 issue of Soldier of Fortune magazine (it had 'Saving Private Ryan' on the cover) titled 'Africa's New Merc Wars' by Al J. venter which discussed how the gov't and UNITA were re-arming for another round of fighting while recruiting mercenaries from S Africa and Eastern Europe.

Cuba/Soviets backed a faction, South Africa backed one, and the Chinese another..... and in the end, the land mines defeated all the factions in a glorious triumph.
