Topic: Asteroid could hit Earth in 2029 Posted: 02-Oct-2007 at 17:23 |
Talk about history repeating itself, well if some of those "Extinctions by way of the Asteroid" theories are correct.
Asteroid could hit Earth in 2029 - Russian astronomer
An asteroid, discovered in 2004, could pose a threat to Earth in 2029, the director of the Institute of Astronomy said Monday.
Boris Shustov said at an international space forum in Moscow that the Apophis asteroid, which is due to cross earth's orbit in 2029 at a height of 27,000 km (17,000 miles), could under certain conditions hit Earth in 2029.
The explosion could surpass the famous Tunguska explosion of June 30, 1908, which affected a 2,150 square kilometer (830 sq miles) area of Russia felling over 80 million trees in the Krasnoyarsk Territory in Siberia.

Must say I'm a tad skeptical about this one. And yourself? What sort of conditions, other than a prior collision, will redirect its path by a degree of 27,000km?

Another chapter of "We're All Gonna Die!"? If it's that far out, it gives us a chance to figure out some way of preventing the confounded thing from crashing into Earth, which could be done rather easily.
Better yet, capture the asteroid and use it as a space station/mining base.

Fear not, fellow forumers; if it becomes a problem, I shall don my superhero costume, fly into the stratosphere, and blast it to bits with my laser-eyes.

There are many interesting ideas about how the asteroid should be destoryed. Some go for nukes, some wants to launch gravity shuttle to alter the direction of the astroid and so forth...

But wouldnt that also open up a new can of worms? Lets say the asteroid gets blown into chunks. Would those chunks still be capable of destroying whole cities, and or killing millions?

I remember hearing about this news in the year '98 when I was in 4th grade. Funny how this thread about apocolyptic asteroids sparks back memories of my childhood....

The Large Hadron Collider is going to kill us all next year. Why worry about 2029?

They hope to blow it up early enough so that the bits of fragment would avoid Earth.. and some small ones are gonna burn out in the atmosphere. Personally, I think it's a dumb idea. They need to create so many variables, complicated, and no back-up plans other than launching more nukes. And of course, maintaining peace by nuclear warheads itself is ironic.

They said the same of an asteroid that was set to hit us in 2012 or was it 2014? Now that this theory is gone we have another one. :)
