QuoteReplyTopic: Disappearance of Magnetic Field... Posted: 15-Mar-2007 at 19:48
I saw some articles about the magnetic field on earth disappearing. About 170ish times of this bizzaare occurance happened in 100 million years or something.... So, if the magnetic field disappears from this earth... how would it affect the world we live in...?
Well, some believe that the decaying of the earth's magnetic field is caused by the eventual shift of the earth's polarity...
One could only speculate how long this could take. How long is a geological instant seen through human eyes? But if it takes a few hundred years, the radiation could prove too great and we all will be looking for some prime subterranean real estate...
The Earths' atmosphere provides good protection against cosmic radiation and there no evidence that polarity shifts have been associated with extinction events in the past.
If the magnetic field failed permanently the Earths' atmosphere would be slowly eroded by the solar wind the same way as Mars. The field does reestablish itself after a shift though, and there should be no long term effects.
