That seems to be accurate. The Nassau were German nobility (Nassau-Siegen/Nassau-Dillenburg, etc.), and William was the beneficiary of his childless cousin, the Prince of Orange. Upon that man's death, he inherited the principality and many estates in Brabant and Flanders.
Without that good fortune, and the favor of Charles V, he may have lived his life as a minor German count (and he may not have been assassinated either). Anyway, the Wilhelmus seems to reflect the German connection in its lyric.

It says "Wilhelmus van Nassouwe ben ik van Duitsen bloed" (William of Nassau am I of German blood", not "We zijn van Duitsen bloed" (We are of German blood). And yes, pikeshot is correct, William of Nassau was German. In fact he never even spoke Dutch. After WW2 in most schools was taught that Duits actually meant Diets (Nederlands, Dutch) but of course the author would have meant Diets he would have written Diets, and not Duits. |

It also says "Den koning van Hispanien heb ik altijd geeert" "The king of Hispania I have always honored".
It is a slightly outdated text... But is is the oldest anthem in Europe, so I think we should stick with it...

Mixcoatl brings up a point. Since this thread is a "language thread," I believe William spoke and wrote in French - being a magnate of extensive estates in the southern Netherlands.
Maurice and William-Louis also corresponded in French (and German).
Also, as an aside, William remained a Catholic until shortly before his murder in 1584. A bit ironic that a French speaking Catholic is the hero of the Reformed Church, Dutch nation.

I knowe I'm a bit biased against national symbols, but our anthem is really bad. Not only is it outdated, but the lyrics don't even match the melody, there's a lot of hahaing and hohoing. "Wilhelmus vahahan Nassouwe ben ik van Duihuitsen bloed" is not a way to sing a song. And then of course there is the bloed-doet nonsense. |

Well, now really. Anthems are not intended to be "up-to-date." They recall past glories, etc.
If you updated the Netherlands' anthem, what would you write? Something about cheese and tulips? Or Amsterdam cat houses? I ask you!!!

As far as I know it used to be 'wij zijn van Dietsen (sp?) bloed'.
Diets is an old word for Dutch if I'm not mistaken.
Not sure when/why it was changed to 'van Duitsch bloed'.

No, it originally really was "Van Duitschen Bloed", like Mixcoatl said above, the "Diets" part was devised only during and after the second world war, when being of German blood became a bit dubious in most people's eyes...
Wilhelmus is just a Latinisation of William, (Willem), which is about as dull a name as you can get in Dutch, right after Jan and Piet.
 It may sound cool to you, but it sounds boring as hell to us...Besides, it does not recall past glories, it is just one big suckup to one person... all sixteen or so parts of it. Apart form the age, there is really no good reason to keep it at all.  Although I still believe it better than the nineteenth century romantic-nationalistic monstrosities most countries have. |
