Mine is the battle of Vienna 1683 when king Jan III Sobieski and the christian coalition routed the huge ottoman army that besieged Vienna.I have a feeling it's somewhat forgotten in west Europe or people just don't learn about it in school.After all if the turks weren't stopped they would probbably dig-in in Vienna and keep their teritories for centuries.

1.  Thermoplyae, 480 BC:  Spartans vs Persians  Clap

2.  Gaugamela, 331 BC:  Alexander Cool  vs the Persians

3.  Camarn, Mexico 1831:  64 French Foreign Legionares vs 2000 Mexican soldiers.  Despite the hopless situation, the Legionaires fought off the Mexicans for several days until only five remained and they ran out of bullets.  Naturally, the remaining five ran out and charged the 2000 Mexicans with only their bayonets.  Two were killed, leaving only three to be captured.  The Mexican commander looked at them and said:  "What are we going to do with you?  We cannot possibly kill men who are so brave."  To which the Legionaires said:  "We will leave with our guns, our colours & our wounded."  The Mexicans obliged.  And off they, the Legionares, went into the sunset.

To this day, the Legionaires still commemorate this victory every year.  It is a key element of their mythology, their esprit de corps.

But before you get too impressed with the French, and have Amnesia with respect to the Maginot Line, Dien Bien Phu, and whatnot, just remember:  The Legionaires aren't French!  That is why the are called "Foreign" Legionaires.  LOLLOL

4.  Marathon, 490 BC:  Greeks vs Persians, 26 mile victory lap and then die...  Dead

5.  Agincourt, 1415:  Love Shakespeare's version of Henry V's Saint Crispin's Day speech.  Shocked

6.  Stalingrad, 1942-43:  Talk about Hell on Earth. Angry

7.  Battle of the Bulge, Dec 1944 - Jan 45:  Nuts! Tongue

8.  Bach Dang River, ~1287:  3rd Mongol Invasion of Vietnam.  Call me biased, but it was spectacular by any measure...  Clap

My country was in war 15yrs ago, i had a freakin AA trenches in the village, and in the distance you could hear the artillery. But no, i wasn't doing hand-to-hand fighting, true. Now that we can put that aside,

- War can be good
- If bad people die that's cool
- Killing can be good
- World isnt black and white
- Learn to differentiate
- Emotions fail

Regardless of the emotional and philosophical side of the war, I believe that the posters in this thread agree how certain people (in this case generals) and battles can be admired, because of tactical, strategical, and moral display.

ive gotta go with the battle of watling street between rome and briton The romans  led by Suetonius Paulinus (3 legions 10,000 to 15,000) and the britons led by rebellious leader Boudicca  having an outstagerring number of 230,000.
 
Despite the odds against the Romans 20 to 1 they still came out victorious
i'll show you how:
 
As you can see this is the battle stradegy of Suetonius he picked the battle field to his advantage by having the woods in the back so not even an attcak from behind was inevitable he had the cavalry on the outer right and left wings to block the flanks and also auxulliries on the inner left and right and his legions in the centre in a formation called the wedge formation a battle formation that was wedged shaped once in it  you were a dead man.
 
Boudicca's stradegy wasnt much of a stradegy at all believing her overwhealming numbers would win the battle having their families behind them watch the battle thinking they will win an easy victory.
 
The battle started with the britons charging towards the legionaries in the centre. The wedge formation was perfect those who got trapped in it died  then Suetonius knew the britons could not break the line. As the Britons kept charging they also noticed  they couldnt break the roman lines seeing all their men dying they ran back in fear Then Suetonius ordered his cavalry to do the final assault but as the britons tried to flee back they were blocked by their families  this was more of a mouse trap to the britons with nowhere to run and the cavalry finishing the onslaught of the battle.
 Casualties: The Britons loss 80,000
                    The Romans loss 400.e

The Battle of Aquae Sextae. Gaius Marius' military reputation was sealed by this victory along with the battle of Vercellae. It was estimated by Plutarch that 100,000 Germans were killed. Considering it was 300,000 (Germans) vs. 35,000 (Marius' force), I think it was a noteworthy battle to say the least.

I am sure that little of know about Shipka battle but I think it deserve attention.It is something like Termopiles but here defender succeeded  to  defeat the enemy.It  is  one of the greatest battle in Bulgarian history.
