LITERAL MEANING OF PAKISTAN

According to the language of the people
of this region, the term "Pak" has a very
special meaning. It means something
very fair or something free from any
evil. The literal meaning of Pakistan
is " THE LAND OF FAIR PEOPLE ",
and the literal meaning of Pakis is
"FAIR PEOPLE". In the same way,
Paki means "FAIR PERSON".

Pak also means pure in Urdu and Persian (maybe other languages too), and each letter in the word Pakistan is supposed to represent a people in Pakistan (with some phamplet written by some Choudhury guy in the 1930s use to prove it). They maybe other theories too. Whats the 'official' (as in government endorsed) view?

Pak means pure in Persian (Urdu takes it from Persian).  Pakistan means Pure Land.  Both words with Iranian origin, also Pakistan's national anthem is in Persian I believe.

That each letter representing each province of Pakistan is a new invention.

Yes, Pak means Pure or Clean. Thus Pakistan means Land of the Pure.

Pak is also in Turkish

If new means 1930s(?) then sure.

" 'Pakistan' is both a Persian and an Urdu word. It is composed of letters taken from the names of all our homelands- 'Indian' and 'Asian', that is Punjab, Afghania (North- West Frontier Province), Kashmir, Iran, Sindh (including Kachch and Kathiawar), Tukharistan, Afghanistan and BaluchistaN. It means the land of the Paks - the spiritually pure and clean. It symbolizes the religious beliefs and the ethnical stocks of our people; and it stands for all the territorial constituents of our original Fatherland. It has no other origin and no other meaning; and it does not admit of any other interpretation."
- Chaudhry Rehmat Ali, in 'Now or Never', published in 1933

Though it looks as though he didn't get the Pakistan he envisioned.

Didn't know it was that old, I suspect though, that the name Pakistan was made first and then the connection with the various lands was realised, as having the Key caps of each word except the last one makes little sense "Pakistab". Urdu is roughly composed of 33% Persian 33% Sanskrit and 33% Arabic, Hindi is the same thing rebranded, the langauge is as old as the Moghul dynasty.

Whats the difference between Afghania and Afghanistan?

I heard a different version from a Punjabi friend of mine:

P- Pakistan

A- Afghania

K-Kashmir

I - Indians (Mohajirs)

S- Sindhis

TAN- BaluchisTAN

Pakistan - Land of Pure (vs British India/Hindustan) makes more sense to me than the Acronym.

It doesn't make any sense. P cannot mean Pakistan when we don't have the word 'Pakistan' to begin with! more to say is that pakistan, Kashmir and Afghania (?) are regions, while Indians are an ethnicity and Sindhi is a language!! most nonsense of all is TAN. How are we suppose to abbreative something and use the ending of a word!? forget it.
Even we don't bother ourselves with these reasons, still the abbreviation cannot be a result of shortening some words using their beginning letter and for one using the ENDING and not just a letter but three (T.A.N)?!?!?

Cywr, that's a nice - I would say - translation of PAKISTAN, but can we really get into etymology of a country's name (which is happen to be a very old province). take this: can 'iran' mean: Islam, Religion, Ayatollahs, Nazism??!

Pakistan is an acronym. It was first coined by Ch Rhemet Ali in his phamphlet "now or never". The actual acronym was: PAKSTAN. The "I" was added later to ease prononciation. The word does not literally mean "land of the pure", the Urdu word for "Pure" which most neatly corrresponds to pure is "Khalis", "Pak", is more akin to "clean". And it was after the lahore resolution when the Congress started lapooning the whole idea of pakistan, by calling it land of the pure, or pure land, that the Muslim League adopted the words meaning with pride.

As for the acronym,
P: Punjab
A: Afghania, (The Frontier)
K: Kashmir
S; Sindh
TAN: Balcochistan.

" 'Pakistan' as envisioned by the student Ch. Rehmat in his pamphlet stated the country would consists of lands of the North West corner of the British Raj, that is Punjab, Afghania (North- West Frontier Province), Kashmir, Iran, Sindh (including Kachch and Kathiawar), Tukharistan, Afghanistan and BaluchistaN. - Chaudhry Rehmat Ali, in 'Now or Never', published in 1933

note Afghanistan referred to the territories east of the Durrand Line formerly part of the Afghan Empire, and Afghania those lands populated by Afghan tribes(Princely state of Amb, Kalabagh, Semi-independent Tribal Areas)

The term Pakistan also had a dual meaning of 'Land of the Pure', implicit in that it would enable the population of the new country to rid itself of corruption, class /economic distinction and previously rigid social restriction and move forward on a uniform scale while preserving religious and cultural purity which was degenerating in mainland India where Muslim practices where mixing up and often similar to those practised by local indian relgions which included idolatry, guru worship and a gradual deviation from Islamic principles. as stated by Abdul Rab Nishter, right hand man of M.A. Jinnah
