what kind of nationality were they? - we don't know

what language did they speak? - again, not enough information

had they had mixed origin from turkic people, iranians, scytians etc? probably

Were Hefthalites avars? - no,
the Avars may have been remnants of the Ruanruan though, some sholars
called them 'Eastern Avars' though (just in case you weren't confused
enough).
