2:185 "Ramadan is the month during which the Quran was revealed, providing guidance for the people, clear teachings, and the statute book. Those of you who witness this month shall fast therein. Those who are ill or traveling may substitute the same number of other days. GOD wishes for you convenience, not hardship, that you may fulfill your obligations, and to glorify GOD for guiding you, and to express your appreciation."

The third "pillar" or religious obligation of Islam (submission in English), fasting has many special benefits. Among these, the most important is that it is a means of learning self-control. Due to the lack of preoccupation with the satisfaction of bodily appetites during the daylight hours of fasting, a measure of ascendancy is given to one's spiritual nature, which becomes a means of coming closer to God. Ramadan is also a time of intensive worship, reading of the Quran, giving charity, purifying one's behavior, and doing good deeds. For Muslims (Submitters), Ramadan is  an opportunity to gain by giving up, to prosper by going without and to grow stronger by enduring weakness.

A question to all Muslims here (I might open a thread for this if enough people are interested), how do you sight the moon at your place? some countries depends on actual astronomical sightning, others by traditionl eye sightining, others with calculation, others just wait to see what is going around them .

Anyhow, interesting, a lot of countries reported sighting the new moon of Ramadan. However, astronomics claim it is almost impossible to sight it on Monday night.

"The Astronomical New Moon is on Monday October 3, 2005 at 10:28 Universal Time. Looking at the visibilty curve one can understand that the moon is in the Southern Hemisphere. The moon is about 15 hours old and being too low on the horizon for North America will set in 14 min. after sunset on west coast. It cannot be seen in North America nor anywhere East of USA October 3. On October 4, it will be visible in most of the world except most of Asia and Europe, where it will be 24 to 31 hours old and less than 2 degrees above the horizon, still not visible. In Europe and most of Asia, it cannot be seen until October 5, when it will be 48 to 55 hours old. Accordingly, the first day of Ramadan will be on Wednesday, October 5, 2005 for North America and most of the world, except most of Asia and Europe"

Yup. If they place observation points with committees that involves most of the Islamic countries, and these observation points should be scattered. If it observed the cresent in Indonesia, then it is Ramadan to all the Muslim world, if the crescent was born on Africa, some observation point should report it and again, all the Muslim world will adopt the next day as Ramadan.

The concept that each region sees his moon does not work with communication. We had that for a reason, as it was hard to tell the birth of the moon to all regions of the Muslim empire with the old communication methods.
