Topic: Fascism in Italy Posted: 21-Jul-2005 at 07:41 |
I am doing some research on Fascism in Italy. I am becoming particularly interested in the relationship between Mussolini and the Catholic Church, especially the way Mussolini sided with the Church during the early stages.
If anyone has any links or info they could offer, it would be greatly appreciated.

The Catholic Church was a natural ally of Fascism. In Italy, Spain and Germany the most reactionary elements of society (church, army, nobility, peasantry and big business) united with the fascists in response to rising socialism and trade unionism. Propaganda was used heavily to draw the workers away from the left-wing activists and keep them in a state of ignorant happiness, while the state instantly provided them with the things promised by the socialists, like cars, free holidays, and sports facilities http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=fcn5ZtaPc7oC&lpg=PA39&dq=palingenetic%20core%20fascism&pg=PA73#v=onepage&q&f=false

Historians like Eatwell and Allardyce also provide interpretations of fascism. Tomorrow i'll try and paste a few relevant links

The European Fascist governments tolerate and even supported Cathlocism (particularly Spain and Italy). Afterall, Italy and Spain are Catholic nations.

My general impression is that Catholicism was far more heavily linked to Spanish fascism than Italian fascism. During the Spanish civil war, extreme leftists tried to completely destroy Catholicism in Spain. This quickly led Catholic militia groups to merge completely into Franco's Nationalist Army and political orgainization.
In Italy, the leftists never made an attempt to destroy the church as an institution. In addition, there were other feasible conservative alternatives in Italy besides out right support of fascism (The king).
