why have taverns been replaced by restaurants?

There has also been a huge cultural shift.  Taverns are usually associated with drinking alcoholic beverages Here in the states drinking and driving has become, finally, a no do for the general public. In the 60's and 70's, diners were open all night on the weekends.  When the band I worked with was done playing, we would stop at the diner on the way home, 2-3 am.  The diners were almost always packed.
