But if I were to hazard a guess? It was probably due to the Protestant Reformation.

Prior to the  prot-reform...
 
...heavy mead, rum, gin, beer and wine drinking and ogling of buxom and, hardly concealed displays of rouged and powered flesh was to be seen throughout Europa for example.  Common. No offense taken. Twas expected so to speak.
 
 
After?
 
Restaurants.
 
 
Old ladies now telling me to have a 'happy holiday' instead of celebrating 'Christ's Mass' with good cheer and kindness towards all my fellow man (tho there I'm in trouble).
 
The only saving grace is Carnival in Rio..Mardi Gras in the 'Big easy' and Fasching in Deutschland.
 
You can thank the Catholic faith for that.
 
Yup definitely the prot-reform and the secular progressives that climbed out from beneath the rocks right after.
