why have taverns been replaced by restaurants?

There has also been a huge cultural shift.  Taverns are usually associated with drinking alcoholic beverages Here in the states drinking and driving has become, finally, a no do for the general public. In the 60's and 70's, diners were open all night on the weekends.  When the band I worked with was done playing, we would stop at the diner on the way home, 2-3 am.  The diners were almost always packed.

Hmmm, In my neck O da woods we have our fair share of Taverns. The next town over, Riverside, has the highest number of bars and taverns per sq. mile in the state.  Which could be the reason our town has the highest number of Churches per sq. mile.

And pubs remain the glory of England.
Except for that ridiculous closing time crap. To early.

And that is the glory of France.

Nah...if your the friend of a local and especially a regular..you would get a pass. Tho you might be asked if you were a homosexual....and not using that term.

Otoh...they'd rather ya was gay then a liberal socialist. Even tho most gays are liberal socialists. In their minds they would just promote you to a Log Cabin Republican status then all is well.

By the end of the night you would be in.... because you would have learned how to talk Texan and wanted to go hunting wild hogs or bass fishing.

That and a lack of tradition brought on by 'pc', generally liberal, secularists. They prefer the 'gen 4x' neo-yuppy philosophy.


Which is to say the 'eddie bauer', casual clothing look& $500 polarized 'elleGi' sunglasses from Italia. These are the types who let their urchins get laid and made at Spring break; doped and drunk and, chalk it up as a liberal passage.


These people would get an ass whupping for even attempting to enter the ole 'Barrell Inn' in Temple, Tx. Matter of fact they wouldn't probably get to the door...just have to take in the parking lot.



Especially after they started pontificating on the righteousness of planned parenthood.


And........... the stupid frackers would deserve it.

ps. I believe.... tho don't quote me.... as I ain't been there in about 5 years...they still got a sign in the window says ''tie your socialists up and leave them out back.''

If you mean this the way I think you do, taverns of old were places that sold food as well as drink.  The modern equivalent is a restaurant with a liquor license.

A lot of taverns in the old days also provided beds for weary travelers, as well, but that custom morphed into the hotel with a restaurant and bar, usually upscale these days.

I don't have an answer for why they aren't still called "taverns", though.
