Henry Frederick was named after two famous European kings:  Frederick II of Denmark (the father of James' wife Anne) and Henry VIII, father of his cousin Elizabeth. James was eager to appear close to the ageing Elizabeth to ensure his succession

James directed that Henry Frederick's household "should rather imitate a College than a Court."    
Sir Thomas Chaloner wrote in 1607:

He often requested friends to send him secret descriptions of French fortifications.    
Henry held a court which was filled with learned, pious, and radical men who he kept a close eye on.
