Topic: King Tut's Face Posted: 10-Jan-2012 at 07:10 |
The following are faces that were created to look like King Tut according to his skull...
Which do you think is a more accurate portrayal?
I think the French did this one
Either the British or New Zealand did this one
The Egyptians themselves did this one

I would say that the first two pictures aren't too dissimilar. I'm not sure what you mean about the nose, but then maybe someone might be able to explain the reasoning.

What a handsome figure of a dragon. No wonder I fall madly in love with the Alani Dragon now, the avatar, it's a gorgeous dragon picture.

http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2005/06/king-tut/williams-text Here's a link to the 2005 Nat. Geo story
I'm a bit fuzzy on what teams from what country did the blind reconstruction. Egypt, US and France?

Under his direction three independent artist-scientist teams, one French, one American, and one Egyptian, used modern forensic techniques to reconstruct Tut’s face. Two of these teams were chosen and sponsored by the National Geographic; the third was selected by the SCA. The French and Egyptian teams were told that the subject was Tutankhamun. The American team was not given the subject’s identity and was thus working “blind.” |

This image of what he might have looked like, to me, is more in line with his skeletal remains.

Sorry the Second face was done by the Discovery Channel apparently...Also there has been some controversy over it. I know Im late lol
"Within Egypt, Hawass has been brawling lately with critics who question the methodology of the CT scan of Tut's mummy, and the forensic re-creation of his face. Hawass curbed the authority and docked the pay of one persistent foe, Ahmed Saleh, an archeological inspector for the Supreme Council who complained, among other things, that the procedures used in the facial re-creation made Tut look Caucasian, disrespecting the nation's African roots."(Copyright (c) 2005 Los Angeles Times)
IMO...The first one has the bone structure correct but the second one might reflect his features a little better

Apart from the way the eyes are made up and the shape of the very top of the head, then both depictions are basically the same.

I often sit in wonder at how certain people want certain historical people to be one color or the other so they can claim them as their own. I wonder if King Tut's father's remains can be recreated, then, lets see how he looked. So much goes into the kitty in making up a person's features or skin tone, picking one hue over the other has caused a lot of fighting.

I'm getting the idea by what I see, fula, of a possible mix racially, but I could be wrong.

I would have to agree...I Dont think the first pic expresses that very much even the second is a little suspect. What is my point? I think the pictures, reliefs, and sculptures of King Tut are good enough and closer then what we might ever get to see The Egyptians are known for their precision...temple building, pyramids etc...why should the depictions of themselves be any less

I take it, fula, that the picture about is of his grandmother. I'm thinking a possible Nubian connection, though Maybe I'm presuming a little.

Yes, if she can be positively identified. A lot of speculation remains on who she exactly was and what was her name? Was he a secondary wife? A concubine? Was she the "Younger Lady" mummy?

But also, the Egyptians were known to carve very flattering images of their pharaohs, always robust and fit no matter their age. In addition, the image of Akenhaten is very un-Egyptian for the time. The question has always been asked, "Was this what he really looked like?" and "Did he order his image to be exaggerated?" Being pharaoh I"m sure he had final approval of the finished product.

Queen
Tiye was a queen of the 18th Dynasty, married to Amenhotep III. The
daughter of Yuya, high official under Thutmose IV. Her mother was Thuya.
Queen Tiye was of Nubian extraction.

The Younger Lady is the informal name given to a mummy discovered in the Egyptian Valley of the Kings, in tomb KV35 by archeologist Victor Loret in 1898. Through DNA tests this mummy has recently been identified as the mother of the Pharaoh Tutankhamun, and the daughter of Pharaoh Amenhotep III and Queen Tiye. So The pics I showed were of his mothers people apparently: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Younger_Lady_%28mummy%29
