Hi there! I just bought this cabinet card, and I'm trying to figure out what kind of uniform this is. Do you have any ideas about the type of uniform this soldier is wearing? Is it even from the Civil War? Thanks so much for your advice.

...Looks like military academy such or possibly British and or Prussian...designed Confederate. This is not my particular expertise......but we have many here who might give you a response...so be patient and I thank you for an honest inquiry and welcome you here.
The key is to investigate the name of the photographer and seek further info. Who were they where were they etc.....

Thanks for the leads- I'll keep investigating. I'm running into problems tracking down the photographer, but I've found some old cabinet cards and CDVs that look like early volunteer militia, or musician soldiers/officers that look somewhat similar. I'll check into the military school angle. I very much appreciate your advice!

He looks a bit old for a cadet, but the frogging on his coat was regulation for musicians. It could be post Civil War as i'm not familiar with the name of the photographer

He might be a Marine bandsman. They wore red coats with similar frogging

Great pic- thanks for the post. Those are really sharp uniforms! You're right, there is a lot of similarity to the uniform the man in my photo is wearing.
BTW, I'm getting seriously addicted to this forum... Can't believe how much you guys know!
