I haven't been able to find any pictures, but one Confederate regiment apparently wore pickelhaubes. These were copied from the regulation German and Swedish helmets of the 1840s, but the insignia was replaced with an American brass shako plate

Other Confederates wore a type of pointed fez or peaked nightcap, often made from the sleeve of an old coat. These hats were Polish in origin and widely worn by French troops during the Napoleonic Wars

The uniform of this South Carolina confederate wouldn't look out of place in Napoleon's army. Contrast it to that of the Texan sergeant on the left

Uniform of the 6th Ohio or "Guthrie Greys." This Northern regiment was active in the eastern theater until it was disbanded in 1864

The Ohio soldier's uniform looks very similar to these tailcoats worn by cadets at West Point, the Citadel and VMI. No doubt the Northern and Southern militias sought to emulate these institutions

Many Virginian regiments were originally outfitted in blue. This is the uniform of the Jefferson Guard, also known as the 2nd VA

For those of you not familiar with him, Mr Don Troiani is one of the leading illustrators of civil war soldiers. Above is a painting of the Louisiana Tigers, smartly attired in their navy blue jackets and blue and white striped pants

The green uniform of this Reb from the 5th Georgia is even closer to the USSS than the private from the Alexandra Rifles. Indeed, the only thing to distinguish him from a Yankee is his D-guard Bowie knife

Prewar photo of the Virginian Young Guard whose uniforms were very similar to that of the Alabama confederate on the previous page

The uniform of the 24th Lousiana was a simple wool overshirt with a cotton tape birdcage pattern every bit as intricate as the expensive private purchase uniforms of the planter class militia

Pleated hunting shirts like this one (described in the first post) were a common private purchase for officers. This one belonged to Confederate General Buckner, but the Osprey Civil War uniforms book has an image of a Yankee wearing an identical coat in blue

Even when a Yankee soldier wore blue he could still be mistaken for a rebel. At Bull Run the Garibaldi Guard took a lot of friendly fire as green Union troops believed their feathered slouch hats were southern uniforms. The red piping didn't help much either: in the regular army this was standard for artillerymen while infantry were identified by blue, black or white facings

Contemporary painting of Virginian Confederates: the Richmond Light Infantry. In many militias the officers wore regulation blue government uniforms as they were professional soldiers, but here the officer wears what looks like a copy of a Napoleonic-era French uniform

The regulation Confederate uniform (grey jacket, kepi and trousers) was already in use before the Mexican War. Here's a Louisianian soldier from 1841

Missouri Confederates from the Emmett Guard, a largely Irish regiment. The soldier in grey is a Minuteman, originally raised to fight off encroaching abolitionist guerrillas of the type led by John Brown

As well as the bearskins, one Confederate unit even wore red coats. The soldier on the left is from the St Louis Greys (1st Missouri) and the one in red is an engineer from the St Louis National Guard Militia, founded in 1852

Texan militia from the Osprey Men At Arms series wearing uniforms based on the Mexican War era shell jacket. Note the Bowie knives and long rifles similar to the type used at the Alamo

Tennesseean Confederates. The officer wears a secession cockade on his hat to distinguish him from a Yank as his uniform is otherwise identical.

More Tennessee Confederates from the Osprey Men At Arms series. The shell jacket of the Rock City Guard might be blue, but it has red piping more typical of artillery uniforms
