Nick, the Koreans used a similar weapons to your 'tiger arrow launcher' shown to launch volleys of rocket propelled arrows, particularly during the Imjin Wars. Also, the Korean short bow of the period, which was made from compound materials, out-ranged the Japanese long bow you show, and was far easier to manipulate from horseback.

I'd like to find out how this machine worked. It must have been a terrifying sight on the battlefield

I can't remember what website the image came from, but it might have actually been a type of repeating crossbow. The single central wheel may have activated the arrows as it moved forward

Does anyone know anything about a Japanese style halberd? Apparently there was something in some anime and one of my friends asked me but I have no idea.
Long handle, big blade thats all I got.

Something like this D'Artagnan? It's the Japanese equivalent of the medieval glaive: a large curved knife on the end of a long pole http://www.amam-magazine.com/lethal-weapons-article.html

Nick, I'm confused about your reference to the above long wooden handled halberd type weapon as a "glaive". I've always taken the glaive to be a double edged short bladed combat sword, not unlike that used by Roman gladiators. Indeed, the very word glaive has its roots in the latin word gladius, the sword of the gladiators. (See entry at p. 521 of "Le Robert pour tous" ed. 1994, Dictionnaires Robert)

During the Middle Ages these European glaives were normally attached to long poles. They were originally agricultural tools similar to billhooks that were used to trim hedges. The Japanese version of the glaive incorporated a katana blade and allowed the user to keep skilled swordsmen at a distance http://www.weapons-universe.com/Swords/Medieval_Polearms.shtml

Nick, thanks for the link. The illustration provided is that of the naginata sword. I find it interesting that in French, the glaive is straight as a stabbing weapon should be, while Turnbull, using presumably an English definition,l uses it for what is obviously a slashing and chopping weapon. Turnbull is, of course, highly regarded when it comes to medieval Japanese history and weapons, so I must presume him correct.
Thanks again.

Sadly, no. I'm not much into photos and my posting skills are somewhat lacking. But thanks for the interest.
