Probably inspired from the Europeans, Safavids built this 55m-high 10-storey residential tower in Isfahan about 500 years ago, when were these buildings started to build?

I know that Rome had apartment buildings, known as insulae.  The best examples of which can be found in Ostia.

Its just a logical solution to a problem of space, once you have a city densely populated enough, you stary to see such buildings.
