To many 18th century colonists "liberty" was the right to own slaves, murder Indians, steal their land, and refuse to pay taxes to the king. This mentality continued in the south well into the 19th century when the slave states seceded from the north to preserve their right to exploit the blacks

It meant people were free to make a living, anyway they legally could, with the blessing
of the church and the government,  so long as all the citizens profited, any collective national
action was deemed acceptable.
