India was once unified in the Maurya empire from 322 BCE to 185 BCE. Ashoka was not a budhist, he was a kshatriya king born hindu, He took up budhism only in the later part of his life during his last conquest...

A more accurate statement, in general respects, than the OP after the Maurya.
However in context, when one deals with the Maurya empire; one can recognize that their territorial acquisitions, geographically, came very close to an inclusiveness not seen again until the British hegemony.
And so if we speak of that ...we can see that a great portion of India et. al... was indeed unified under the Maurya.
But 'definitions and context' and later historical applications will occur.
