I dont think that there is a such a surname in East India.
"Ghazi" means soldier of Islam.Earlier muslim rulers of India used to kill hindus(infidels) personally to achieve the title Ghazi or Khazi. Akbar the mughal emperor is known to have killed Hemu to earn the Ghazi title.

my surname is Bendi But i don't know origin of my surname i am from Andhra pradesh. I would like to know the history of my surname Anyone know best way to search this subject: The name Bendi Patmahara keeps coming to my mind, strangely, I do not know why at this juncture. I assume it is a name, not a title or an object or place. I know it's strange, that's why I'm posting. Thanks [/QUOTE]

My family's oral history states my great grandfather always said he was East Indian. When his family came to America in the early 1800's their surname sounded like Whims, Weems, Wims or Williams. Is there an East Indian name that sounds like one of the names listed?
Thank you in advance for your time and reply.
