These are some of the most beautiful birds in the world. The males are adorned in the most amazing array of colours and decorations.
Early explorers to the islands around New Guinea and Australia were so in awe of the plumes that they believed these creatures must have heavenly origins and that they only came down to earth to die hence the name.

I can't believe I missed this thread! I think I was in Europe at the time it was posted. Anyway, Birds of Paradise must be th most diverse and aesthetically stunning birds on the Planet. The sheer array of colours, appendages, mating rituals and calls is breathtaking. I hope to follow in the steps of "Attenborough in Paradise" one day, and see them first hand.
