(Owerri) On May 9th, 2007, a bill to eliminate all forms of gender discrimination in Imo State was passed by the State House of Assembly, despite opposition. The bills says that , no person or representative of the state organ or body, public institutions or private enterprise, shall either in spoken words, acts, inaction, laws, regulations, administrative proceedings, custom or practices discriminate against any girl or boy, woman or man. It further, prohibits the dismissal of any woman from work on grounds of marriage, pregnancy or maternity leave and marital status.

This is the kind of news I like to hear!

Even if it is not implemented immediately, at least the bill was passed, leaving the way open for the future of women's rights in Nigeria. As I always say when "new" laws or reforms are made, "It's a foot inside the door"! These things have to start somewhere, and this is a good start!

Agreed! Big%20smile

Just thinking through the practical ideas but such laws are always to be welcomed!
