I was wondering where would the Poles be today if they would of rejected Catholicism or switched for some other religion? There would probably be no Polish Pope, Poland would probably not be in the same state as it is today, because the fact of having a Catholic Pope brought together Poles to fight the opression of the atheist Soviets. What are your views on this hypothetical situation?

If Poland ha dnot accepted catholicism I would imagine they would adopt Orthodox, formt he pressure of Muscovy, and perhaps by doing so, it may have led to better relations among the 2 nations, even a Union like the Polish-Lithuanian one...Poland would be more eastern instead of being wannabe western( I hate how hurting we are to be accepted by other western countries). Of course bad part is that who knows we might have been Russified or something, or not we managed to make Poland dominate over a bigger Lithuanian country so you neevr know, the partitions might have not happened, Soviet Russia might have expanded far more then it did, there might have been no "Miracle under the Vistula"....endless possibilities..

You may not be too far off, and selection of a Polish pop may not have been completely accidental. Communism was considered to be a big threat and promotion of religion was used to battle the soviets system through using one of their weakness which was forced atheism. The danger seemed so big that at times this was done without consideration of the after affects. No where else this is more evident that in Middle East where we probably are seeing the after affects of that right now
