A great discovery has just recently been made in eastern Ethiopia. Scientists have discovered 4.1 million year old (hominid) fossils that fill a gap in human evolution. Here's the site:
It's about time they found some decent A. anamensis meterial. There is a minority opinion that says that A. africanus (the Australopithicine that is the imeadiate ancestor of Homo) evolved from from A. anamensis, not from A. afarensis as usually accepted, and that A. afarensis was only the ancestor of Paranthropus (robust australopithicines), not all later hominids.
