The British empire was the largest in 1923

MONGOL EMPIRE WAS THE LARGEST. COME ON GUYS NOONE'S GONNA ARGUE WITH THIS. BRITISH OWNED AUSTRALIA, CANADA, NEW ZEALAND and those land had almost no population it is easy to take over them. To conquer them the British dont need to send an large army. THey sent just settlers. But Mongol Empire is much different. Only China's population at that time was 100 million and Mongolian population was no more than 1 millon and Mongols conquered almost all known land at that time. Without Mongol Empire there would be no British Empire and Britain didnt had any land in Europe except their homeland, but Mongols conquered all Asia, MiddleEast and 60% of Europe

And yet all that land is still smaller than the British Empire at its peak.

Neither did the steppe wilderness which made up a lot of the Mongol Empire. Plus, the New Zealand Maori warriors were fierce and put up a fight.

The method in which the Empire was acheived is not significant, the final resulting Empire that was carved is the point of discussion. However, it was a very amazing accomplishment by the Mongols.

With all due respect, where is the logic behind this? I see no reason why there could be know no British Empire if it weren't for the Mongols. - Knights -

Yes the treasures of Asia are so beautiful and bigger than european. But there is a series of invasions of tatars hordes in South-east Europe. So many treasures and foodstuffs are stolen from Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria & Byzantia.

i would say that mongol empire was the biggest (looking at the landwise). Then again british empire was big to. I cant really tell which one was bigger. What about russian SSSR. During their communist system, they were pretty big to. But the biggest empire so far i have to call for roman empire (not landwise), but the way of their structure and how many civilizations have fallen under their rule for centuries.

I fail to see how hard it is for the british and Spanish Musketeers to conquer a few cavemen of australia, a few hunters and gatherers of New Zealand and to watch the American Indians slaughter each other and just take over.
I can safely say that the Persians or Chinese in the 5th Century BC can destroy the Aztecs army in the 1600s.

The British Empire in 1920 ruled 25% of world population. That was the heighest portion recorded in history, I suppose....But the most deserved empire was that of Mongols. By most deserved, I refer to wars against resistance.

Plus all of India, about half of Africa - which is a massive continent, Mercator projection doesn't show its landmass properly - parts of the Middle East, and various countries all over the place (eg Burma, Malaysia, New Guinea).
From the middle of the 1800s to WW1 Britain added 9 million square miles of territory - more than the entire Soviet Union (8.6 million square miles) - in addition to the territories it already possessed (Canada, Australia, India, etc). Total landmass at greatest extent was 14.2 million square miles - the greatest extent of the Mongol empire was 12 million square miles, and its population wasn't anything even close to the half billion of the British Empire.

Hard
to keep track of this thread. The British are out of it because they had guns,
but many keep mentioning them. It is tempting to say the Mongol Empire was
the largest because of the land mass they covered, but a lot of that was not
inhabited either. There were great cities along the trade routes, yet outside
of great cities were huge areas of farmlands and farmers
sacrificed in times of war. As long as they had food those in the cities didnt
give a toss about what happened to the peasants.
The Mongols
were cherry pickers. They were mainly famed for their nasty habit of needlessly
destroying dams and irrigation systems. No telling what some get off on. They
moved on without a backward glance unless there was an immediate way to keep
making a profit from the area, in which case they brought in their relatives to
settle the area or forcibly married the women as sex slaves. Its not
like they declared war on anybody. They were dealing with an internal
population explosion in their own lands. Once the right leader to follow had
been found all the young hoons who had been kicked out of the family nest rode
off to find somewhere else to be nasty. I mean who is calling them civilized?

I think the primary determining factor of an empire's size should be population controlled. What is so great controlling a huge piece of land if five people live on it? It is much harder to control people than land. Therefore, we should measure the size of an empire by the number of people under its control, and not necessarily the amount of land.

We could further refine that way of thinking to say the number of cities controlled. The cities have and still do control the countryside in their area of the world. The many people can and did live on the land were at the mercy of invaders. People once lived anywhere they could make a living. The areas of unsettled lands, if well watered with fertile soil, are always an attraction to invaders whether populated or not.
Then again that would depend on the invader and what they came looking for. Land or loot. If they wanted loot the rich cities them attracted like flies to the honeypot. Robbing peasants is slow and tedious task with not much to show for the effort at the end of the day.

They had guns....hahaha....so what?....the mongols had horse archer(and europe didn't used them) so they can not be counted?....come on...the British empire controled the most territories then any other empire(it's not important if they fought rabble armies with spears)....
