If you have money to spend on education, you might try "The Teaching Company" www.teach12.com and check out courses on classical music. Be sure to call them and ask for the latest sales price to save 70%. All the historical information that goes with classical music is even more fun. And you learn some really interesting things about how religion influenced music, and what it had to do with the Protestant Movement, how secular music won acceptance, and what nationalism has to do with music.

Or on the other hand Ralfy.... you could as I do.... take a moment to eliminate the torments of the mind and rid it of the sometimes self destructive, dangerous and obssesive, not to mention self induced compulsions to right all things wrong as you or I might view them. Which of course for just one man is utterly impossible.
Should you continue to try of course is entirely up to you.
Works exceptionally well for me on religion and politics.
I suggest Schiller's Ode to Joy....as performed by Ole Ludwig...in his 9th.
Thanks

Oh, you mean just listen to inspiring works like the Ninth. Yes, I understand. Beethoven's symphonies were the first recorded works in CD form that I purchased (von Karajan's '63 box set), from a small store on the corner of Orchard Road in Singapore exactly twenty years ago.
But I think the OP is looking for more, which is why I recommended the Naxos site:
Books like Libbey's:
and references like the Penguin Guide, and references that look at classical music in terms of history, visual art, etc., like Stanley's book.
For collecting, I use Libbey for the basic library (Naxos also has suggestions and a downloadable catalog with ratings for its various works), then the Penguin Guide for other works, and Kamien:
for basic knowledge of musical elements for better appreciation.
The TTC guides are also great.
