Here is one definition. I do agree that once the central regime has changed that is not the same empire

empire   Audio pronunciation of "empire" ( P )  Pronunciation Key  (mpr)
n.

    1. A political unit having an extensive territory or comprising a number of territories or nations and ruled by a single supreme authority.
    2. The territory included in such a unit.

Before going into this, a definition of this empire must be given, people confuse the definition of empire, in modern time it means a imperial possession of foreign territories. Back then it was just a state ruled by an emperor. I think comparing these two definition by themselves are largely meaningless. Whats more definiting is the duration of the central regime without change. For example, the so called Roman Empire that lasted 5 centuries is far from a single continuos regime. The central power has been overthrown plenty of times. Of course a change in the governmental structure to such a degree that alters the power within should also be categorized as another regime.

The Angevin Empire was damn short. It's even a very virtual empire.

Obviously the longest is Byzantine empire lasted more than a thousand years. If we take as starting day the changeover from Rome to Constantinople as capital in 330, it lasted since 1453.

The Ottoman Empire, ruling continuously from 1300 to 1923. That's six centuries of unbroken sovereignty. Pretty much, I'd say. I don't know how you left that out, Miller.

If not the longest, the Roman Empire was undoubtly the most influencial. And I am considering the Byzantine period as well (The Christian era). So a total period from around 30's BC to 1453 AD, shaping europe and, consequently, the world.

The Seljuk Empire lasted in 1157. but if we take Seljuks of Rum as the western part of the Empire, and it is, the empire ended in 1308, after the invasion of Ilhanl and another hugeTurkmen migration to Anatolia from Oguz steppes.

The Ottoman Empire surely held a big time period of time. The Beylik became offically indipendent with the end of Anatolai Seljuk rule, 1299. Osman Beg, the son of Ertugrul Beg who was the Chief of Kay tribe, which was one of the Oguz (Turkmen) tribes and he was placed at Karacada in central Anatolia during the Anatolian Seljuk rule as an "U Beg".

The Beylik appeared in St and Domani south eastern Marmar region. But firstly the son of Osman Beg, Orkhan Beg made the Beglik a country from a Turkish state. And this country ended as an empire in 1923, with the end of the dynasty and the republic system...

Mongol Empire's prime started at 1279AD!!(The empire came to existance at 1206 under Temujin)  When Yuan annexed the rest of Song.  Get the facts right!  Also the decline started at 1368 and the final Mongol empire in foreign soil was wiped out at 1502.   Plus the Mongol empire wasn't completely destroyed until  mid 1600s

The First Mexican empire that lasted 8 months.
The extension of the empire was 4 million square kilometers. From the limits with Oregon to the border with Panama, that was part of the Great Colombia.
