Some late war confederate uniforms were such a dark shade of grey they were almost black. Officers tried to stop the men from wearing sky blue trousers out of fear they would be shot by their own side

I think the Rebs above might be Tennesseeans as one of them is wearing a coonskin cap. Note his Enfield cartridge box and white cap pouch, which (in the British army) was worn on the strap

To quote Alan Farmer, Johnny Reb's greatcoat, boots, pants and blanket were made by Uncle Sam. It was common practise to strip the bodies of dead Yankees to replace worn-out kit. As many Yanks replaced their regulation kepis with slouch hats, it would be very difficult to determine the allegiance of the Reb in the center were it not for his battle flag and grey-clad buddies

The Montgomery True Blues were a Confederate artillery regiment attired in blue. They were founded in 1863 and consisted of veterans from the 3rd Alabama Project Gutenberg

The 2nd Wisconsin, of Iron Brigade fame, originally wore khaki or butternut uniforms. The long blue coats and black hats weren't introduced until after Bull Run Link

The same Zouaves in campaign dress. Note the shield-fronted John Wayne-type shirt worn as an unofficial uniform early in the war

After days of searching, i've finally found an image of a Confederate pickelhaube. This leather helmet, with decorated plume, was part of the uniform of the Loudun Cavalry. Note the yellow piping and German-style turn-down collar on the officer's uniform

This South Carolina rifleman wears a leather Albert shako and frock coat with epaulettes similar to the uniform of the USMC. The other enlisted man has red piping and a "birdcage" on the front of his coat, marking him out as a musician (most likely a bugler)

New Jersey militia wearing grey tailcoats. The leather bell-crown shakos were worn as full dress by the Mexican War era regular army, replacing the War of 1812 Belgic shakos

More Tennessee Confederates from the Osprey Men At Arms series. The shell jacket of the Rock City Guard might be blue, but it has red piping more typical of artillery uniforms

Tennesseean Confederates. The officer wears a secession cockade on his hat to distinguish him from a Yank as his uniform is otherwise identical.

Texan militia from the Osprey Men At Arms series wearing uniforms based on the Mexican War era shell jacket. Note the Bowie knives and long rifles similar to the type used at the Alamo
